Aussies Abroad Wrap: Mooy & Behich star in Scottish Cup, Ryan's Dutch debut

Maty Ryan made his AZ Alkmaar debut, Aaron Mooy put in a man-of-the-match performance and scored two goals while Aziz Behich also found himself on the scoresheet in the Scottish Cup.

Starting in the Netherlands, where Maty Ryan's approved visa allowed him to make his debut for AZ Alkmaar as they beat Fortuna Sittard 3-1 on Monday.

The Subway Socceroos skipper's new club sit second in the Eredivisie, just two points off league leaders Feyenoord. 


In Serie B, Fran Karacic played another 90 minutes as Brescia Calcio lost 3-1 to Frosinone Calcio on Monday. 

Jason Davidson's KAS Eupen had their tie with Belgian Pro League leaders Genk postponed. 

Awer Mabil started on the bench as AC Sparta Prague beat FC Nürnberg 3-1 in a friendly on Sunday.

Ajdin Hrustic is unfortunately set for a stint on the sidelines after his club Hellas Verona confirmed the midfielder will undergo ankle surgery in the coming days. 

Joel King also started on the bench as Odense Boldklub lost 4-0 to FC Nordsjælland on Saturday in friendly match as they prepare for the resumption of the Danish Superliga on February 19. 

Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe both started as St Pauli drew 0-0 with FC Midtjylland in a friendly on Saturday as they prepare for their 2. Bundesliga tie with Nurnberg on January 29. 

James Holland started and scored a goal in FK Austria Wien 2-1 victory over FC Shakhtar Donetsk on Saturday in a friendly as they prepare for the Austrian Bundesliga to resume on February 13.

United Kingdom

In Scotland, Aaron Mooy scored a double as Celtic advanced in the Scottish Cup with a 5-0 victory over championship side Greenock Morton on Saturday.

Mooy opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 18th minute after a handball before he rounded out the scoring with a close-range left-foot finish in the 84th minute.

The brace ended an excellent week for Mooy, who celebrated reaching his first final with Celtic last weekend with another impressive performance in the Scottish League Cup semi-final win over Kilmarnock.


Elsewhere in Scotland, Aziz Behich also found himself on the scoresheet as Dundee United beat Stirling University 3-0 on Saturday. 

Behich played 90 minutes and opened the scoring on the stroke of half time by swivelling and lashing Steven Fletcher's knockdown into the roof of the net.

Keanu Baccus and Ryan Strain both also started as St Mirren drew 0-0 with Dundee, before winning 3-0 on penalties. Baccus played 58 minutes, while Strain was substituted in the 106th minute.

Cameron Devlin and Kye Rowles both started and played 90 minutes as Heart of Midlothian advanced in the Scottish Cup with a 3-0 win over Hibernian on Monday. 

Nathaniel Atkinson also came off the bench in the 81st minute while Garang Kuol was an unused substitute. 

After joining Hibernian on an 18-month deal on Saturday, James Jeggo also made his Hibernian debut in the match. The midfielder started and played 73 minutes in his first experience at Easter Road. 


Dylan McGowan played 90 minutes as his Championship side Hamilton Academical knocked Ross County out of the Scottish Cup with a 5-3 penalty shootout victory after the match ended 0-0. 

McGowan scored the third penalty in the shootout as Hamilton dispatched all of their spot kicks to pull off an upset victory. 

In the English Championship, Riley McGree started and played 83 minutes while Bailey Wright came off the bench in the 70th minute as Sunderland beat Middlesbrough 2-0 on Sunday.

The result ends Boro's four game winning streak and snaps Sunderland's two game winless run. 

Harry Souttar missed Stoke City’s 4-0 win over Reading on Saturday due to a minor hip injury. 

Tom Rogic came off the bench in the 67th minute as West Bromwich Albion lost 2-1 to league leaders Burnley on Saturday. 

Callum Elder also came off the bench in the 70th minute as Hull City lost 1-0 against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday in the Championship while Kenny Dougall's Blackpool had their match against Huddersfield postponed due to a frozen pitch.

In League One, Massimo Luongo was an unused substitute as Ipswich Town FC lost 2-1 against Oxford United on Sunday.

Asia

Over in Asia, Mitch Duke has started pre season with his new club Machida Zelvia ahead of the 2023 Japanese J2 season.

Duke made the move after spending the past two seasons with Fagiano Okayama for whom he scored 11 goals in 49 appearances.

Zelvia kick off their 2023 J2 campaign at home against Vegalta Sendai on Saturday, February 18.

In League One, Caleb Watts' Morecambe had their match against Port Vale postponed due to a frozen pitch. 

In League two, Lachlan Brook's Crewe Alexandra also had their tie against Stockport postponed due to the weather. 

In Premier League 2, Cameron Peupion played 90 minutes as Brighton & Hove Albion U21 lost 2-1 to Everton U21 on Monday.   

In Scotland, Lewis Miller was an unused substitute as Hibernian lost 3-0 to Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Cup fourth round on Monday.

Europe

In the Netherlands, Josh Rawlins played 90 minutes as Jong FC Utrecht drew 1-1 with Den Haag on Sunday in the Eerste Divisie.

Dylan Ryan was an unused substitute as FC Den Bosch beat Jong PSV 1-0 on Saturday in the Eerste Divisie. 

In Germany's 3. Liga, John Iredale came off the bench in the 92nd minute as SV Wehen Wiesbaden beat Hallescher FC 3-2 on Monday.
