Duke on the move in Japan

Socceroos striker, Mitchell Duke has a new club after signing with Machida Zelvia ahead of the 2023 Japanese J2 season.

Duke makes the move after spending the past two seasons with Fagiano Okayama for whom he scored 11 goals in 49 appearances.

Machida Zelvia are based in Tokyo and finished the 2022 season in 15th position on the J2 table.

The 31-year-old’s transfer comes off the back of an impressive World Cup campaign with the Socceroos in which he lead the line in all four matches, scoring the winner in Australia’s 1-0 victory over Tunisia.

Duke, who earned his first cap in 2013 has made 23 appearances for the Socceroos, scoring 10 goals in the process.

Zelvia is Duke’s third club in Japan with the forward also having spent three seasons at Shimizu S-Pulse from 2015-2018.

Duke said he is hungry to help Zelvia achieve promotion in a statement on the club website.

"I'm so happy to have signed for Machida for the 2023 season," Duke said.

"I'm looking forward to getting started, meeting everyone at the club, meeting my teammates and playing in front of the amazing fans.

"I know it's going to be a great year, we've got big ambitions and i hope my experience from the World Cup will help play a part in us getting to J1.

"I can't wait to get started, i'm loving being back in Japan, it's my second home."

Zelvia kick off their 2023 J2 campaign at home against Vegalta Sendai on Saturday, February 18.
