Ryan settling in nicely ahead of Dutch top-of-the-table clash

This weekend, Maty Ryan could go top of the Eredevise with AZ Alkmaar.

Since joining in January, the Subway Socceroos goalkeeper has made six appearances for the Dutch club, who sit two points off the summit with 21 matches played.

However that buffer could be erased on Saturday night (Sunday, 7am AEDT), as Alkmaar take on table-topping Feynoord away from home.

Ahead of his toughest match yet, on paper at least, the Subway Socceroos goalkeeper  shared why he is enjoying life in the Netherlands so far.

"I'm enjoying it so far," Ryan told Az Alkmaar. "I've moved into apartment now, got a car and got all the little these little things settled.

"The weather when I first arrived was a little bit wet and wild and windy, but recently it's been quite good since then. The city centre reminds me a lot of my time living in Belgium, the infrastructure of the cities, the buildings everything is just easy on the eye - picturesque and beautiful to sort of walk through."

As mentioned, the 30-year-old's first European experience came in nearby Belgium, where he made 77 appearances in a successful stint with Club Brugge.

Having plied his trade in the Premier League, La Liga and at three FIFA World Cups since then, Ryan knows exactly what he is looking for in a footballing set-up.

It is becoming clear AZ Alkmaar offers exactly that.

"So far, it's been really good," Ryan explained.

"I'm really enjoying getting to know my teammates and the people around the club and on the pitch, I think there's been plenty of positives.

It was evident straight away that there's a real team togetherness and camaraderie amongst the boys, which in my experience is always important within a successful team.

"Knowing that everyone has each other's back and they're willing to put their bodies on the line for one another is an important aspect of the team and one that's really nice to be a part of.

"There's been some crazy moments and obviously a lot of positive results and performances since joining, and I'm really enjoying being part of the team and trying my best to help."
