Caltex Socceroos to face Thailand in Melbourne

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today (Sat) confirmed that the Caltex Socceroos will play their final 2018 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifier Group B match against Thailand at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on Tuesday 5 September 2017.

Tickets for the crucial clash go on pre-sale to the Football Family with a 10% discount from 9am (AEST) on Tuesday 18 July with general public on-sale from 12pm (AEST) Monday 24 July.

FFA Chief Executive Officer David Gallop is expecting a large vocal home crowd to cheer the Caltex Socceroos on towards the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

“It’s definitely crunch time in the qualification campaign and this match against Thailand will be pivotal,” said Gallop.

“Everyone remembers where they were when we defeated Uruguay in 2005. This match could very well be one of those ‘where were you” moments.

“Ange and his team have been preparing for this moment for the past two and a half years and we encourage all sports fans to support the boys as they look to secure direct qualification to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.”

Mr Gallop thanked the Victorian Government and Visit Victoria for their support of this crucial match.

“Of course events like this are not possible without the partnership of the Victorian Government and I thank them for the support they give to football and their valuable assistance to bring this crucial match to Melbourne,” said Gallop.

The Victorian Minister for Sport, The Hon John Eren MP, was equally excited about the Caltex Socceroos returning to Melbourne.

“Our World Cup dream is up for grabs – and there’s no better place than Melbourne for our Socceroos to book their spot to Russia,” said Minister Eren.

“With the best pitch in the country and the most passionate fans, Victorians will do all they can to help our boys seal automatic qualification in September.”

Caltex Socceroos Head Coach Ange Postecoglou was looking forward to closing out the campaign in his hometown.

“The next two matches in this campaign are extremely important for us,” said Postecoglou.
