Aussies Abroad: Ryan collects another win, Baccus and Strain impress in League Cup

Subway Socceroos captain Mat Ryan continued his winning start with AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, while an Aussie pair helped St Mirren progress to the quarter finals of the League Cup.

Following a UEFA Europa Conference League Qualifier clean sheet last week, Maty Ryan started for AZ Alkmaar in their 3-1 win over RKC Waalwijk on Monday as they returned to Eredivisie action, to collect a second straight victory to begin the new campaign.

In Scotland, Keanu Baccus played a full game and Ryan Strain came off in the 90th minute as the duo impressed as St Mirren advanced to the quarter finals with a 1-0 win over Motherwell on Saturday. Both were involved in the initial build up of the goal scored by Caolan Boy-Munce. They take on Hibernian in the next round in late September.

Martin Boyle also started and played 59 minutes in the Scottish League Cup on Monday as Hibs beat Raith Rovers 2-1. Olyroo Lewis Miller also came off the bench in the 60th minute while James Jeggo played the full 90 minutes.

Elsewhere in the Scottish League Cup, Kye Rowles played a full game while Subway Olyroo Calem Nieuwenhof started and played 61 minutes as Heart of Midlothian beat Partick Thistle 4-0 to advance in the  Scottish League Cup on Sunday. Cameron Devlin was an unused substitute after scoring a brace in UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying on Friday.

In the English Championship, Riley McGree came on in the 69th minute as Middlesbrough drew 1-1 with Huddersfield on Sunday. Subway Olyroo Sammy Silvera grabbed an assist, while Tom Glover was also on the bench.

Massimo Luongo and fellow Aussie Cameron Burgess both played impressively and played the full 90 helping to keep their side undefeated and sitting at the top of the Championship as Ipswich Town beat QPR 1-0 on Sunday.

In League One, Alexander Robertson started again for Portsmouth and came off in the 94th minute as they drew 0-0 with Cheltenham on Sunday. 

Elsewhere in League One, Kenny Dougall was an unused substitute for Blackpool in their 0-0 draw with Leyton Orient on Sunday.

Callum Elder came off the bench for Derby County in the 76th minute of their 1-0 win over Fleetwood Town.

Over to Belgium, Aiden O'Neill started and played 70 minutes for Standard Liege in a 1-0 loss against Cercle Brugge on Sunday. 

Jason Davidson played 90 minutes as KAS Eupen continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-1 win against K.V. Kortrijk on Monday.


In Germany, Jackson Irvine played 90 minutes while Connor Metcalfe came off in the 64th minute in the 2.Bundesliga as St. Pauli drew 0-0 with SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Saturday. 

Milos Degenek played a full game for FK Crvena Zvezda in Serbia as they beat FK Spartak Subotica 3-0 on Sunday.

In Norway, the Eliteserien continued for Nick D'Agostino as Viking Fotballklubb beat Stabæk Fotball 1-0 on Monday to make it a ten game winning streak in the league. He played 27 minutes replacing compatriot and Subway Olyroo Patrick Yazbek.

Denis Genreau came off the bench in the 57th minute for Toulouse as they continued the Ligue 1 season with a 1-1draw against PSG  on Sunday.

In Serie B, Alessandro Circati played a full game for Parma as they kicked off their season with a 2-0 win against Feralpisalò on Monday.

Over to Asia, where Thomas Deng came off the bench in the 76th minute for Albirex Niigata in a 1-0 win over Avispa Fukuoka on Friday in the J1 League. 

Mitch Duke came off the bench in the 85th minute in the J2 League again on Saturday as Machida Zelvia lost 3-2 to Shimizu S Pulse. 

Mitch Langerak was in goal for Nagoya Grampus in a 1-0 loss to Urawa Reds on Friday in the J1 League. 

In the K1 League, Harrison Delbridge played 90 minutes for Incheon United on Friday in a 2-2  draw with Aaron Calver's Gwangju. 

Finally in Major League Soccer, Brad Smith scored two minutes after coming off the bench in Houston Dynamo's 5-0 thrashing of Portland Timbers.

As previously mentioned Sam Silvera recorded an assist as he played 90 minutes in Boro's win.

Calem Nieuwenhof played just over an hour for Hearts in their 4-0 win over Partick Thistle in the Scottish League Cup. 

Lewis Miller came off the bench in the 60th minute for Hibernian in their 2-0 Scottish League Cup win over Raith Rovers.

Patrick Yazbek played 63 minutes for Viking as they made it a formidable 10 successive triumphs.

Nicholas Bilokapic was in goal as Peterborough United as they lost 1-0 to Northampton Town on Sunday. 


Jay Rich-Baghuelou played a full game in League One for Accrington Stanley in a 2-1 win over Gillingham on Sunday.

Nectarios Triantis was an unused substitute in the Championship on Sunday as Sunderland beat Rotherham 2-1.
