Lurking at the back post, the 23-year-old controlled a cross from Norwegian teammate Gustav Wikheim with his right foot before swiftly regaining his balance and lashing the ball across Sonderjyske ‘keeper Sebastian Mielitz with his left from the tightest of angles.

Midtjylland doubled the advantage and maintained their unbeaten start to the Danish Superliga campaign when Brazilian midfielder Evander thundered in a second from long range.

Mabil was stationed on the right wing by interim manager and former Portsmouth defender Brian Priske, who took the reins following the resignation of Kenneth Andersen in wake of the club’s Europa League exit to Rangers last week.

Midtjylland are hot on the heels of league leaders Copenhagen with six wins and one draw from their opening seven matches.

Meanwhile, AGF’s Mustafa Amini and Alex Gersbach secured a big 3-0 away win away to Brondby.

Amini partnered young Australian Zach Duncan in midfield and played 90 minutes, as second-half goals from Bror Blume, Jakob Ankersen and Patrick Mortensen helped AGF shock the 2019 Danish Cup Finalists in their own backyard.

Setback for Leckie’s Hertha

After beginning the Bundesliga campaign with a point away to Bayern Munich, Mathew Leckie’s Hertha Berlin were brought back down to earth in a 3-0 defeat to Wolfsburg.

Leckie had played 90 minutes from right wing-back in that opening day draw with the German champions but was rotated out for the visit of Wolfsburg, who took a ninth minute lead from the penalty spot via Dutch forward Wout Weghorst.

Hertha dominated the first half but spurned several opportunities to draw level, before conceding late goals to Josip Brekalo and Jerome Roussillon.

Elsewhere, Tom Rogic and Daniel Arzani were not involved as Celtic beat Heart of Midlothian 3-1.

Young Ivorian striker Vakoun Issouf Bayo scored a double for Neil Lennon’s side either side of a strike from Callum McGregor.

James Jeggo was not involved as Austria Wien drew 2-2 with Hartberg in the Austrian Bundesliga.
