Mooy out to dent Liverpool’s EPL title hopes
While Huddersfield’s fate in the Premier League was sealed some weeks ago, the Terriers could still play a significant part in the destination of the title.
Aaron Mooy’s bottom-placed club head to Anfield on Saturday (5am), with many expecting the likes of Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino to run riot for Liverpool.
But Mooy – formerly on the books of the Reds' title-rivals Manchester City – could do his old employers a big favour if the Terriers somehow avoid defeat on Merseyside.
It is an equally important weekend for Mat Ryan’s Brighton at the other end of the EPL ladder.
The Seagulls’ midweek loss to Tottenham has them just three points ahead of Cardiff City, who occupy the last remaining relegation spot with three games to play.
Ryan’s side are at home against Newcastle United at 2.30am on Sunday knowing a win would be a significant boost in their hopes of avoiding the drop.
Both Premier League matches can be seen on Optus Sport.
Meanwhile, in the Championship, Jackson Irvine’s Hull City officially dropped out of the playoff race during the week but they will still want to finish the season with a bang.
The Tigers are in Wales as they take on Swansea City on Sunday morning (kick-off midnight Saturday).
Massimo Luongo’s QPR are in action at the same time, hosting Nottingham Forest.
Milligan set for feisty Edinburgh Derby
There will be plenty of passion on the pitch and in the stands as Mark Milligan’s Hibernian host Hearts in the Edinburgh Derby on Sunday (9.15pm kick-off).
The two bitter rivals last met just three weeks ago, with Hibs recording a 2-1 win on Hearts' home ground in a match that saw a coconut thrown onto the pitch, while smoke from flares forced a delay.
Hibernian – who drew 0-0 with champions Celtic last weekend – are currently in fifth spot and three points ahead of their local rivals.
While it will not mathematically be theirs, Celtic will all but wrap up an eighth straight Scottish Premiership crown if they beat Kilmarnock on Saturday (9.30pm).
Tom Rogic scored against the same opponents to wrap up the title last season and the Aussie could again be front-and-centre for the Hoops in this one.
Celtic hold a nine-point lead over second-placed Rangers – who host Aberdeen on Sunday – with four games to go.
Aussie defenders chasing Cup glory
It’s down to the semi-final stage of the King’s Cup of Champions in Saudi Arabia and there’s two Caltex Socceroos stars set to feature in the weekend’s games.
Milos Degenek’s Al Hilal are chasing a domestic double and will start favourites in the first semi as they host Al Taawon in Riyadh on Saturday (2am).
The second semi-final also features an Aussie central defender, as Matt Jurman’s Al Ittihad are at home against current Saudi Pro League leaders Al Nassr. Kick-off in Jurman’s encounter is at 2.25am on Sunday.
Elsewhere in Asia and there is a top-of-the-table clash for Mitch Langerak in the J.League.
Langerak’s Nagoya Grampus – currently sitting third – host second-placed Sanfrecce Hiroshima at 4pm on Sunday.
Kicking off an hour later, Andrew Nabbout and his sixth-placed Urawa Reds head to lowly Shimizu S-Pulse.
Elsewhere in Europe…
Danny Vukovic’s Genk are looking increasingly likely to win the title in Belgium as the league enters its final five rounds.
The Caltex Socceroos keeper’s side currently have a six-point buffer to Club Brugge ahead of Sunday’s (4.30am) trip to Gent.
In Denmark, back-to-back defeats last week look to have ended the title hopes of Awer Mabil’s FC Midtjylland.
With five games left in the playoff campaign – including Tuesday’s (3am kick-off) trip to Nordsjaelland – Mabil’s side is 11 points off league-leaders FC Copenhagen.
Also in the Danish Superliga, Mustafa Amini’s AGF have a home game against Horsens at 10pm on Sunday.
Mathew Leckie’s Hertha Berlin are away against Europa League semi-finalists Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga at 11.30pm on Saturday, while down a division, Robbie Kruse's VfL Bochum take on Erzgebirge at 9.30pm on Sunday.
