By virtue of topping Group C, the Socceroos would now play the second placed outfit from Group D, Iraq.
The Socceroos were knocked out at this same stage in the tournament four years previously and knew that anything but a victory in this fixture would cast a bigger shadow over their performances in Asia.
A nail-biting encounter played out between the two sides and it took until the dying moments of second half extra time before Harry Kewell popped up in the Socceroos’ time of need.
