Socceroos Abroad: Irvine and Metcalfe combine to put St Pauli clear, Ryan keeps another clean sheet

In another big weekend of Socceroos Abroad action, Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe combined to put St Pauli in charge of 2. Bundesliga promotion while Maty Ryan kept a clean sheet against a Dutch powerhouse.

Subway Socceroos

Starting in Germany, where Jackson Irvine (cap #568) and Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) both played key roles as St Pauli boosted its promotion hopes with a 4-3 win over Holstein Kiel in the 2. Bundesliga on Saturday.

Irvine played a full game and assisted Metcalfe's 57-minute goal while Metcalfe also registered an assist in a standout performance by the Socceroos pair. 

The result opens up an eight-point advantage to their nearest challengers as well as a 10-point jump to rivals Hamburg as automatic promotion looms closer.

Elsewhere in the 2. Bundesliga, John Iredale came off the bench in the 74th minute for SV Wehen Wiesbaden in a 2-1 loss to Paderborn on Saturday.

In Croatia, Fran Karacic (cap #607) played a full game and scored a goal for NK Rudes in the Croatian Football League as they lost 2-1 to Istra 1961 on Saturday.


In Thailand, Kenny Dougall (cap #608) opened the scoring and played 69 minutes for Buriram United as they beat Police Tero FC 6-2 on Saturday to maintain their three-point lead at the top of the table. 
 


In the Netherlands, Mathew Ryan (cap #555) was in goal and kept another clean sheet for AZ Alkmaar as they held on to fourth spot with a 2-0 win over Ajax on Monday in the Eredivisie.


Staying in the Eredivisie, Ajdin Hrustic (cap #589) played another full game for Heracles Almelo as they lost 1-0 to Utrecht on Saturday.

Garang Kuol (cap #627) was an unused substitute for FC Volendam as they lost 4-0 to Heerenveen on Monday.

Over to the English Premier League, where Joe Gauci (cap #631) was on the bench again for Aston Villa as they beat Nottingham Forrest 4-2 on Sunday.

In the English Championship, Cameron Burgess (cap #633) and Massimo Luongo (cap #571) both played full games for Ipswich Town in a 3-1 win over Birmingham City on Sunday.

Elsewhere in the league, Tom Glover was in goal for Middlesbrough in a 2-0 loss to Plymouth Argyle on Sunday. Riley McGree (cap #609) also started and played 59 minutes while Samuel Silvera (cap #634) was subbed in the 80th minute. 

In League One, Gethin Jones (cap #639) played a full game for Bolton Wanderers on Sunday in a 4-1 loss to Blackpool.
