Match Preview: Socceroos v Vietnam

The Socceroos continue their FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ qualifying campaign as they travel to Hanoi to face Vietnam at 10pm (AEST) on Tuesday.

The match, which will be played without fans at the My Dinh National Stadium, is the Socceroos' second qualifier in five days.

WORLD CUP HUB UPDATE 2022

On Friday, Australia cruised to a 3-0 victory over China to get off to the perfect start in Group B, with Awer Mabil, Martin Boyle, and Mitch Duke all getting on the scoresheet in Qatar.

While the Socceroos secured an impressive ninth straight victory, Graham Arnold’s men now have to switch their focus to Tuesday’s clash with Vietnam.

Arnold is expected to rotate his squad for the match, with Boyle appearing to tweak a hamstring before being substituted in the second half of the win over China.

Vietnam come into the match having lost 3-1 to Saudi Arabia in their first third round qualifying match on Friday.

The Vietnamese, who are appearing in the third stage of World Cup qualifying for the first time, will be without right-back Do Duy Manh after he was sent off in the previous match.

Vietnam are ranked 92nd in the FIFA world ranking, with all but one player playing his club football outside of Vietnam. 28-year-old goalkeeper Dang Van Lam is a club teammate of Socceroo Adam Taggart at Cerezo Osaka in the J1 League.

While Vietnam lost their first match and will be without their fans, there is still plenty to play for in Hanoi as the Socceroos hope to continue their impressive start to Group B.

What they said

Socceroos Head Coach Graham Arnold

"I do believe it's an advantage for the away team to play against a home team with no crowds and there'll be no crowds in Vietnam.

"The most important thing for me is that we recover well from (Friday's) game. We get ourselves ready mentally and freshen up for the game against Vietnam and we go there and get three points."

Vietnam Head Coach Park Hang-seo

"Against Saudi Arabia, we scored first but lost the match. We were unlucky suffering two goals from the penalty spot, and then we played with less men.

"My players tried their best. Two penalties showed some lack of tactics which will be perfected when we play back home.

"In the next match we know Australia are stronger than Saudi Arabia. But on home ground, we will try harder."

What's next?

The Socceroos recommence their qualifying campaign in October as they face Oman and Japan. Match details are TBC.
