Mabil: No longer a ‘talent’, I am ready for Caltex Socceroos responsibility
He’s one of Australia’s most exciting attacking players and only made his national team bow less than a year ago, but now FC Midtylland ace Awer Mabil is eager to take on more responsibility for Australia as the Caltex Socceroos commence their path to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.
Mabil, who earned his first international cap for Australia in Kuwait City last October and scored 15 minutes into his debut, told FFA’s media unit with the Socceroos in the United Arab Emirates that he’s keen to go to a new level throughout the green and gold’s qualifying campaign.
“People say I am a talent and this and that, but right now I am ready for the responsibility because I think I am coming to that age where I have to perform week in, week out,” Mabil said.
“I am no longer a ‘talent’ and I am ready for that responsibility and I am ready to do everything whether that is off the field, on the field, to make sure that I take that responsibility to be delivering for my country month in, month out, and week in, week out for my club. Mentally I am prepared for that and physically I am going to prepare for that, and I think it is time to take that responsibility and start making a mark.”
PREVIEW: Kuwait v Caltex Socceroos
“If I am the fan of the Socceroos I would be excited to see what is ahead because it looks really, really good and the competition is getting tougher and tougher which is good for the team and the country. We young players coming through, we now have to take that responsibility and take the moment. We are all coming to an age where we have to deliver for the country.”
Mabil, who since October 2018 has made ten international appearances and scored four goals, has fond memories of his debut in Kuwait just under a year ago.
“Before we went to Kuwait we stayed in this hotel (near Dubai) and the first day that I arrived Arnie (Caltex Socceroos Head Coach Graham Arnold) said ‘you’re going to score, you’re going to score’ … the whole week he was saying that to me,” Mabil revealed.
ULTIMATE GUIDE: Road to FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
“I didn’t believe it until it happened, but I was prepared for every moment and then when it happened I just thought of Arnie and what he had said during the past week.
“So it does bring in a lot of memories for me, big memories that I will never forget. Making my debut for my country and getting a goal for my country is something that I will never, ever forget and something I can brag about to my kids one day.”
