Desire to entertain the secret behind Petratos’ Caltex Socceroos selection

Bolter Dimitri Petratos says a mindset of trying to “entertain the fans” has helped him achieve his dream of a call-up to Bert van Marwijk’s Caltex Socceroos squad.

The Newcastle Jets attacker was this week named in the final 26-man squad for the upcoming friendlies against Norway and Colombia.

It’s a reward for a stunning Hyundai A-League season for the Jets, in which the 25-year-old has scored nine goals and provided eight assists as the club has surged to second on the ladder.

Petratos was still on a high when he spoke to reporters on Thursday, admitting he was still in shock to be in the squad.

"It was out of nowhere but it was a very good feeling," Petratos said.

“It’s every Aussie player’s dream to represent their country,” he added.

“Hopefully I get the chance to get some game time.”

He certainly won’t be short on confidence if he does see some action against Norway or Colombia, having gone to a new level under the guidance of Ernie Merrick.

Asked the secret to his form – and subsequent selection - Petratos said: “I’ve just been trying to assist my teammates and trying to get on the scoresheet as well.

“I just try to combine in the front third and try my best to entertain the fans.

“It’s getting the basics right with my football, working hard, keeping my head down and just going with it.”

Before Petratos boards the plane for Europe to link up with the Caltex Socceroos, he’ll be hoping to help the Jets keep the pressure on league-leaders Sydney FC with a win over Wellington Phoenix in Auckland on Sunday.
