Caltex Socceroos World Cup opponent watch: Rabiot fires for PSG

Young French midfielder Adrien Rabiot has continued his good form heading towards June’s FIFA World Cup, scoring for PSG in their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash against Real Madrid on Thursday (AEDT).

Rabiot opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium but it proved fruitless for the French outfit, losing the first leg 3-1.

Rabiot’s goal came when a deflected cross fell perfectly for the 22-year-old as he arrived in the box, producing a cool finish past Keylor Navas.

His performance is sure to have caught the eye of Caltex Socceroos boss Bert van Marwijk, with France Australia’s first opponent in Group C in Russia.

He has played five times for the French national team, including their most recent match, a 2-2 friendly draw against Germany in November.

Rabiot also featured in France’s penultimate FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria in October, a match France won 1-0.

And the talented young midfielder wasn’t the only Frenchman to impress in that clash with Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane also superb for the home side.

Varane, who is likely to be France’s first-choice central defender at the World Cup, did a superb job keeping the likes of Neymar and Edinson Cavani in check.
