Aussies Abroad Wrap: Mooy & Mabil assist in big wins

Awer Mabil registered an assist in a 4-1 win for AC Sparta Prague while Aaron Mooy also bagged two assists and Maty Ryan kept a clean sheet in the Eredivisie.

Starting in Scotland, where Aaron Mooy played 74 minutes and picked up two assists as Celtic came from behind to thrash 10-man St Mirren 5-1 on Sunday. 

He linked the play well in the opening period and it was his cross that was diverted into the net by Jota to make it 1-1 before Mooy's quality free kick to the back post that saw Johnston make it 2-1. 

Thanks to Opta, Mooy has now been directly involved in six goals in his last five games in the Scottish Premier League (2 goals, 4 assists).

Keanu Baccus also played 90 minutes for St Mirren while Ryan Strain started and was substituted in the 62nd minute. 


Celtic's next Scottish Premiership match is at home to Hearts on Thursday (AEDT) while St Mirren face Dundee United on Sunday (AEDT).

After a week off, Kye Rowles played 90 minutes and contributed to a clean sheet while Cameron Devlin came on in the 78th minute and Garang Kuol came on in the 79th minute in Heart of Midlothian's 3-0 win over St Johnstone on Sunday.

Moreover, Rowles made the most passes (64) and clearances (5) of any player for Heart of Midlothian in Matchday 28 of the 2022/23 Scottish Premier League, as well as winning all seven of his duels on the day (via Opta).


It was a big result as Hearts begin a huge week, with Celtic to come in the Scottish Cup and league next.

Nathaniel Atkinson was also an unused substitute. 

Elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership, Aziz Behich played another 90 minutes for Dundee United in a 3-1 loss to Aberdeen on Sunday.

James Jeggo also returned to Scottish Premiership action with another 90 minutes as Hibernian beat Livingston 4-1 on Sunday.

It was a third straight win for Jeggo's side as they sit fourth in the league with six games remaining. 


In England, Harry Souttar played another 90 minutes as Leicester suffered a 1-0 loss to Southampton on Sunday. Leicester are 15th in the Premier League, three points above the relegation zone. 

In the Championship, Riley McGree started again and was substituted in the 68th minute as his Middlesbrough side bounced back from their first defeat in six matches with a 5-0 win over Reading on Sunday. 

Boro are third in the Championship but they have closed the gap to Sheffield United to four points with the emphatic victory.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Bailey Wright played 90 minutes for Rotherham United in a 3-1 win in over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday. 

Kenny Dougall also played 90 minutes for Blackpool FC in a 0-0 draw with league leaders Burnley on Sunday.

The Seasiders are now six points from safety and 22nd in the table while Burnley are now 13 points clear at the top of the Championship. The visitors also saw a 31-match scoring streak come to an end at the hands of the Seasiders.

Callum Elder also played 90 minutes for Hull City in a 2-0 win over West Brom on Sunday.

In League One, Massimo Luongo started and played 76 minutes for Ipswich Town FC in a 4-0 win over Burton on Sunday. 

Europe

In Germany, both Jackson Irvine played 90 minutes while Connor Metcalfe started and was substituted in the 70th minute as St Pauli extended their winning run to six matches with a 2-1 win over Hansa on Saturday in the 2. Bundesliga.

In the Netherlands, Maty Ryan played again and kept a clean sheet for AZ Alkmaar in a 1-0 win over Vitesse on Saturday. AZ Alkmaar are now third in the Eredivisie, five points off top spot.

Awer Mabil came off the bench in the 69th minute and grabbed an assist as AC Sparta Prague returned to Czech First League action with a 4-1 win over Teplice on Sunday.

It was Mabil's second in his last three games in the competition and in fact, Mabil's 71 minutes per assist in the competition is the second-most frequent of any player this season (min. 2 assists).

In France's Ligue 1, Denis Genreau was an unused substitute for Toulouse FC in a 1-0 loss to Clermont Foot on Monday.

In Serie B, Fran Karacic started and played 45 minutes for Brescia Calcio in a 1-1 draw with Cagliari on Monday.

Jason Davidson also started and played 78 minutes for KAS Eupen in a 2-1 loss to Union Saint-Gilloise in the Belgian Pro League on Monday.

Asia & The Middle East

The J1 League continued for Thomas Deng on as he came on in the 42nd minute for Albirex Niigata as they continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-2 draw with Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the J1 League, Mitch Langerak was in goal again for Nagoya Grampus as they suffered their first defeat of the season with a 1-0 loss to Sagan Tosu on Saturday. 

Langerak had recorded back-to-back clean sheets to open the season but that run has now ended. 

Mitch Duke played 88 minutes for Machida Zelvia in the J2 League in a 2-1 win over Zweigen Kanazawa on Sunday.

In the K1 League, Harrison Delbridge played another 90 minutes for Incheon United in an entertaining 3-3 draw with Daejeon Hana Citizen on Saturday. 

Over to Qatar, where Trent Sainsbury played 90 minutes for Al-Wakrah SC in a 4-0 win over Markhiya on Saturday.

The United States

In the MLS season, Milos Degenek played 90 minutes and helped Columbus Crew keep a clean sheet in a 2-0 win against DC United on Sunday.

Elsewhere in the US, Alex Gersbach was an unused substitute for Colorado Rapids in a 0-0 draw with Sporting Kansas City on Sunday.

In the English Championship, goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic played again as Huddersfield suffered a 4-0 defeat to Coventry on Sunday. 

Huddersfield are bottom of the table, nine points away from safety with 12 games remaining.


In League One, Caleb Watts returned from injury with a substitute appearance in the 90th minute for Morecambe in a 0-0 draw with Bolton on Saturday.

In League Two, Lachlan Brook was an unused substitute as Crewe drew 1-1 with Sutton United on Sunday.

In the Netherlands, Dylan Ryan came off the bench in the 67th minute in the Eerste Divisie as FC Den Bosch suffered a humiliating 13-0 loss to PEC Zwolle on Saturday. 

In Germany's 3. Liga, John Iredale came on in the 81st minute for SV Wehen Wiesbaden in a 4-1 win over FC Ingolstadt 04 on Sunday.
