Aussies Abroad Wrap: McGree, Rowles & Duke all score, Kuol features on Bundesliga bench

It was another big weekend of Aussies Abroad action as Riley McGree scored in the Championship, Kye Rowles netted his first Hearts goal and Mitch Duke fired his side to a win in the J2 League while an Olyroo featured on the bench in the Bundesliga.

United Kingdom

Starting in Scotland, where Kye Rowles started and scored his first Heart of Midlothian goal as they came from behind to defeat St. Johnstone 3-2 on Monday.

Unfortunately, Rowles was forced off after injuring his foot as he landed, having just powered a header beyond Remi Matthews to cancel out St.Jonstone's opener.

Nathaniel Atkinson also started the match and played 62 minutes. 

Elsewhere in Scotland, Aaron Mooy and Celtic continued their winning start to the season by thumping Aziz Behich's Dundee 9-0 United on Sunday. Mooy came off the bench in the 62nd minute while Behich was an unused substitute.

Martin Boyle also started and played 90 minutes as Hibernian lost 1-0 to  St. Mirren on Sunday while Olyroo Lewis Miller came off the bench in the 87th minute. 

In England, Riley McGree kicked off the scoring for Middlesbrough as they claimed their first win of the Championship season with a 2-1 victory over Swansea City on Sunday at the Riverside Stadium.

After Boro capitalised on a Swansea mistake, McGree charged into the attacking third where one touch to control the ball was followed by a calm finish into the bottom right corner to bag his first goal of the season. 

McGree has now scored four of his fice Middlesbrough goals last season against Welsh teams —his other was just across the Severn against nearby Bristol City.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Kenny Dougall started and played 90 minutes as Blackpool drew 3-3 with Bristol City on Sunday while Bailey Wright was an unused substitute as Sunderland lost 1-0 to Norwich City on Saturday. 

In Olyroos Abroad news, Tyrese Francois was an unused substitute as Fulham lost 2-1 to Arsenal on Sunday.

Cameron Peupion started and played 90 minutes in Premier League 2 as Brighton U-21 drew 2-2 with Arsenal U-21 on Sunday. 

In the Championship, goalkeeper Jacob Chapman featured on the bench as Huddersfield drew 2-2 with West Brom on Sunday.

In Olyroos injury news, Lachlan Brook has been ruled out of League Two action for up to six weeks after picking up an ankle injury during a 2-2 draw with Northampton Town last weekend. 

Europe

Starting in Denmark, where Mat Ryan started as F.C. Copenhagen lost 3-1 to FC Nordsjælland on Monday.

Elsewhere in the Danish Superliga, Joel King also started and played 90 minutes as Odense Boldklub recorded back-to-back wins by beating Silkeborg 2-1 on Monday at 2am (AEST).

In the 2 Bundesliga, Jackson Irvine played 90 minutes for St. Pauli as they played out a 2-2 draw with Paderborn on Saturday. Connor Metcalfe was an unused substitute. 

In France,  Denis Genreau was an unused substitute as Toulouse FC suffered their first loss of the season against Nantes on Sunday.

In Belgium, Jason Davidson and James Jeggo both started and played 90 minutes as K.A.S. Eupen ground out a 1-0 win over Westerlo on Monday.


In Olyroos Abroad news, Alou Kuol was an unused substitute as VfB Stuttgart drew 0-0 against 1. FC Köln on Sunday. It was the first time the 21-year-old has featured on the bench in the Bundesliga. 

Asia & The Middle East

In Japan, Mitch Duke scored the only goal for Fagiano Okayama as they won 1-0 against Gunma on Sunday. Duke capitalised on a mistake from the opposition goalkeeper by lofting the ball over his head into an empty net to score his sixth goal of the J2 League season. 

The United States

Finishing with Major League Soccer, where Socceroos defender Miloš Degenek started and played 90 minutes as his Columbus Crew side secured a last-minute goal to draw 2-2 with Cincinnati on Sunday.  Currently, in seventh on the MLS Eastern Conference, the draw stops Cincinnati from overtaking Columbus in the last final series play-off position.
