Aussies Abroad: Ryan's penalty heroics, McGree scores and assists, Olyroo on the move
Maty Ryan made another big penalty save in a penalty shootout to help AZ Alkmaar qualify for the UEFA Conference League group stage while Riley McGree came off the bench to make an instant impact in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Subway Socceroos
Starting in the UEFA Europa Conference League play-offs second leg, where Maty Ryan (cap #555) was in goal and made a crucial save in AZ Alkmaar's 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Brann on Friday. With the two-legged two finishing in a 4-4 aggregate draw, Ryan stepped up to help his side qualify for the tournament.
And following his heroics the Dutch club subsequently learned its Group Stage fate, which includes facing Premier League side Aston Villa.
After a week off from league action, they return to the Eredivisie with a tie against Vitesse on Monday at 1:15am (AEST). AZ have opened the campaign with back-to-back wins.
Martin Boyle (cap #599) also played a full game while James Jeggo (cap #601) played the full match in Hibernian's 5-0 UEFA Europa Conference League play-off loss to Aston Villa on Friday. Olyroo Lewis Miller also played 90 minutes.
They return to Scottish Premiership action on Monday at 12am (AEST) when they travel to Aberdeen. Hibs parted ways with manager Lee Johnson last week after they lost all three of their opening Scottish Premiership games.
Elsewhere in the UEFA Europa Conference League play-offs, Kye Rowles (cap #622) played a full game while Cameron Devlin (cap #625) played 82 minutes with Nathaniel Atkinson (cap #620) in a 4-0 loss to Greek side PAOK in the second leg on Friday. Subway Olyroo Calem Nieuwenhof did not feature due to injury.
They return to Scottish Premiership action on Monday at 12am (AEST) when they host Motherwell.
Elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership, Keanu Baccus (cap #628) and Ryan Strain's (cap #624) St Mirren will look to continue their unbeaten start to the season when they travel to Livingston on Sunday at 12am (AEST).
Ryan McGowan's (cap #546) St Johnstone also host Dundee on Sunday at 12am (AEST).
Over to England, where Riley McGree (cap #609) came off the bench in the 85th minute to score and assist for Middlesbrough in a 3-1 win over Bolton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
With the tie locked at 1-1, the 24-year-old scored a 91st-minute winner via a beautiful strike from range and then set up his teammate Morgan Rogers with a lovely assist as Boro booked its place in the third round.
It was the Socceroos midfielder's second goal of the 2023/24 campaign, having found the net in the previous round.
Subway Olyroo Sammy Silvera also came off the bench in the 73rd minute, while Tom Glover made his second start in goal.
They return to Championship action on Sunday at 12am (AEST) when they look for their first win of the campaign against QPR.
Elsewhere in the EFL Cup, Alex Robertson (cap #630) started and played 67 minutes for Portsmouth in a 1-1 draw (5-4 penalty loss) to Peterborough United on Wednesday.
Portsmouth return to League One action on Sunday at 12am (AEST) with another matchup against Subway Olyroo Nicholas Bilokapic Peterborough United. After starting the campaign with back-to-back wins, Portsmouth have drawn their past two matches and sit in seventh position.
Kenny Dougall (cap #608) played 90 minutes for Blackpool as they bowed out of the EFL Cup with a 5-0 loss to on Wednesday.
They return to League One action against Wigan Athletic on Sunday at 12am (AEST). After winning their first game, Blackpool are now winless in their past four matches so they will hope to beat a Wigan side five places below them.
Callum Elder's (cap #614) Derby County also face Bolton at the same time on Sunday in League One.
Massimo Luongo (cap 571) and fellow Aussie Cameron Burgess' Ipswitch Town will look to bounce back from their first Championship defeat of the season when they face Cardiff City on Sunday at 12am (AEST).
Harry Souttar's Leicester City also face Hull City on Sunday at 12am (AEST) in the Championship.
In Serie B, Alessandro Circati played 90 minutes for Parma as they continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-0 win over Pisa on Wednesday. Circati, who named in the latest Subway Socceroos squad to face Mexico, enjoyed another impressive outing completing 97% of his passes, made three recoveries and clearances and two blocks.
He is likely to feature again on Sunday at 2:30am (AEST) when they face Reggiana.
Elsewhere in Italy, Ajdin Hrustic (cap #589) is a chance to feature for Hellas Verona when they continue their Serie A season against Sassuolo on Saturday at 2:30am (AEST).
Over to Asia, where Mitch Langerak (cap #566) was in goal as Nagoya Grampus were knocked out of the Emperors Cup on Wednesday with a 2-0 loss to Kashiwa Reysol.
Nagoya face Yokohama FC on Saturday at 7pm (AEST) when they return to J1 League action.
Thomas Deng (cap #598) could also return to J1 League action on Saturday at 7pm (AEST) when Albirex Niigata face Urawa Reds.
In Major League Soccer, Brad Smith (cap #575) came off the bench in the 69th minute for Houston Dynamo in a 2-0 win over Columbus on Thursday.
He could feature again on Sunday at 12:30am (AEST) when they face LA Galaxy.
Smith scored two minutes after coming off the bench in the Dynamo's 5-0 thrashing of Portland Timbers last weekend.
In Switzerland, Awer Mabil (cap #597) could make his debut for Grasshopper Club Zürich against FC Stade Lausanne-Ouchy on Sunday at 2am (AEST).
Mabil signed a two-year contract with an option for a third after struggling to nail down regular game time over the past two years at Cadiz in Spain's La Liga.
In the Belgian First Division A, Jordan Bos (cap #632) is set to miss an extended period of time for KVC Westerlo when they look to pick up their first win of the campaign against Cercle Brugge on Sunday at 12am (AEST). Bos had his appendix removed and is expected to spend the next few weeks on the sidelines. After drawing their first match of the campaign, Westerlo have now lost four games in a row and are languishing near the bottom.
Elsewhere in Belgium, Aiden O'Neill (cap #629) could start again for Standard Liege when they face RWDM on Sunday at 4:45am (AEST). O'Neill has started every game of the season so far.
Jason Davidson (cap #545) could also be in action in Belgium when KAS Eupen face Mechelen on Sunday at 2:15am (AEST). Eupen are fourth in the league.
Denis Genreau (cap #610) could also be in action when Toulouse continue the Ligue 1 season against Clermont Foot on Sunday at 9pm (AEST). They will be looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season in their last outing.
Genreau's Toulouse also had their UEFA Europa League draw which will include a trip to Anfield.
Over to Germany, where Jackson Irvine (cap #568) and Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) featured against in the 2 Bundesliga for St. Pauli as they drew 1-1 against Eintracht Braunschweig on Saturday morning (AEST). Irvine registered the assist as he played 90 minutes, while Metcalfe appeared as a substitute in stoppage time.
Milos Degenek (cap #585) could also start again for FK Crvena Zvezda in Serbia when they face Novi Pazar on Sunday at 4am (AEST).
Degenek's Crvena Zvezda also found out their UEFA Champions League fate during the week. They were drawn into Group G alongside Manchester City, RB Leipzig and Young Boys.
In Qatar, Trent Sainsbury (cap #574) is likely to feature for Al-Wakrah SC against Al Sadd on Sunday at 3:15am (AEST).
Back to Asia, where Mitch Duke (cap #559) is likely to feature in the J2 League again on Sunday at 8pm (AEST) when Machida Zelvia face Gunma. Machida are nine points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand.
In the K1 League, Harrison Delbridge (cap #623) is likely to feature for Incheon United when they face fellow Aussie Alex Grant's Pohang Steelers on Saturday at 8pm (AEST). Incheon are unbeaten in the past three games but face a tough test against a Steelers side who sit in second position.
In India, Jason Cummings scored from the penalty spot as Mohun Bagan beat FC Goa to book a place in the Durand Cup final.
Subway Olyroos
Starting with some transfer news, Cameron Peupion has signed with League One club Cheltenham Town on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion.
In the EFL Cup, Tyrese Francois came off the bench for Fulham in the 82nd minute as they drew 1-1 (5-3 penalty win) against Tottenham on Wednesday.
As previously mentioned, Sam Silvera came off the bench in the 73rd minute for Middlesbrough in a 3-1 win over Bolton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
They return to Championship action on Sunday at 12am (AEST) when they look for their fist win of the campaign against QPR.
As alluded to Calem Nieuwenhof has missed the previous three matchday squads after suffering a calf injury which forced him to withdraw from the Subway Olyroos' AFC U23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024TM Qualifiers in Tajikistan.
Nicholas Bilokapic is likely to be in goal for Peterborough United when they face Alex Robertson's Portsmouth in League One on Sunday at 12am (AEST).
Nectarios Triantis could feature in the Championship for Sunderland on Saturday at 9:30pm (AEST) when they host Southampton.
Elsewhere in England, Jay Rich-Baghuelou is likely to play for Accrington Stanley in League One when they face Notts County on Sunday at 12am (AEST).
Lewis Miller could play when Hibs return to Scottish Premiership action on Monday at 12am (AEST) when they host Motherwell. He also played 90 minutes on Friday in the UEFA Conference League.
Subway Young Socceroos/U18
- Adrian Segecic will spend the 2023/24 season on loan at Dutch Eerste Divisie side FC Dordrecht from Sydney FC. In his first match, the 19-year-old scored also found the net in a 4-2 away with against FC Emmen.

- Rhys Youlley, who was part of the Australia U-18 that travelled to Portugal in June has signed with Jordan Bos' KVC Westerlo after a transfer fee was agreed with Macarthur FC

- In League One, Jack Iredale could be in action for Bolton when they face Derby County FC on Sunday at 12am (AEST). He played 90 minutes on Wednesday in the EFL Cup as they lost 3-1 to an Aussie stacked Boro.
- Ashley Maynard-Brewer is also likely to feature for Charlton on Sunday at 12am (AEST) when they face Fleetwood in League One action.
- In Serie A, Cristian Volpato could feature for Sassuolo when they face Hellas Verona on Saturday at 2:30am (AEST).
