United Kingdom

Starting in Scotland, where Aaron Mooy's Celtic will face off against Aberdeen on Saturday at 11:30pm (AEDT) as the Scottish Premiership season resumes with matchday 17 of 33.

While Mooy was on Socceroos duty at the FIFA World Cup, Celtic travelled to Australia for friendlies against Sydney FC and Everton before heading to Portugal for a training camp and friendly against Stade Rennais.

The Hoops sit nine points clear at the top of the table and will be raring to go after the break.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Aziz Behich has also returned to Dundee United, where he is in line to make an appearance against Livingston on Sunday at 2am (AEDT).

Dundee United played Swansea in a friendly match where the Championship side ran out 2-0 winners during the World Cup break while a scheduled match against Ayr United was postponed due to illness at the Somerset park club.

Keanu Baccus' St Mirren will also be in action against Motherwell on Sunday at 2am (AEDT).

Much of St Mirren's break was spent watching and supporting history-maker Baccus, who had a standout FIFA World Cup campaign. As the first St Mirren player to play at the World Cup, he will be looking to bring his impressive World Cup form back to the Scottish Premiership.

He featured in all four of the Socceroos' matches including starting against Argentina in the Round of 16, where he was tasked with marking Messi.

Cameron Devlin and Nathaniel Atkinson are also in line to make appearances when Heart of Midlothian face Kilmarnock on Sunday at 2am (AEDT) while Kye Rowles is suspended after receiving a red card in his last match for the Edinburgh club against Livingston.

Devlin and Atkinson were given a bit of time to rest but will be back with the group when Hearts return to Scottish Premiership action on Sunday.

Hearts used the World Cup break to play friendlies against Swansea at Tynecastle and Blackburn in Marbella. Their final friendly against Almeira was abandoned at the break after a brawl broke out on the pitch.

In England, Riley McGree's Middlesbrough will also face off against Burnley on Sunday at 2am (AEDT) in the Championship.

McGree also started and played 72 minutes as Boro returned to Championship action with a last-minute win over Luton Town on Sunday. There was no sign of fatigue as McGree ran around relentlessly, always looking to get on the ball and create something for his side.

Currently 12th in the Championship, McGree will be hoping for another positive performance to propel his Boro side up the table when they travel to the league leaders on Sunday.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Harry Souttar could be in line for another start when Stoke City play Bristol City on Sunday at 2am (AEDT).

After returning from a standout World Cup campaign with the Socceroos, Souttar started and played 90 minutes in England's second-tier Championship on Sunday as he helped Stoke earn a valuable point in a 2-2 draw with Cardiff.

Souttar won 100 per cent of his tackles and ground duels, had 50 touches, six clearances, and three blocks in Australia’s second World Cup Group D match against Tunisia before putting in another impressive display against Argentina in the Round of 16.

Bailey Wright's Sunderland also take on Hull City on Sunday at 2am (AEDT).  Wright did not feature in the match-day squad for Sunderland's 2-1 loss against West Brom on Tuesday but could be in line for an appearance against Hull.

In Olyroos Abroad news, goalkeeper Nick Bilokapic could feature on the bench when Huddersfield face Watford at 2am (AEDT) on Sunday. Bilokapic was also on the bench in a 1-0 loss to Sheffield United last weekend.

Starting in Italy's Serie B, where Fran Karačić and Brescia Calcio face Pisa on Sunday at 4am (AEDT). Karačić lined up at right-back and played 90 minutes as Brescia lost 2-0 to Parma in their last outing on Tuesday.

Brescia currently sit in seventh position and are 12 points off the top.

Meanwhile, Ajdin Hrustic's Hellas Verona take on Istra 1961 in a club friendly ahead of the Serie A return on January 5.

In Spain, Awer Mabil could be in action when Cádiz CF face Roma in their final friendly match before the La Liga resumption on Saturday at 6am (AEDT).

After returning to his club side after the World Cup, Mabil came on in the 62nd minute as Cádiz lost 4-3 to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday.

In Olyroos abroad news, Josh Rawlins could also be in action in the Eerste Divisie when Jong FC Utrecht take on Jong AZ Alkmaar on Saturday at 6am (AEDT). Rawlins also played 90 minutes in Monday's 2-1 win over Jong Ajax.
