Aussies Abroad Preview: Socceroos face off across Scotland and England

It is another interesting weekend of Aussies Abroad action as our Subway Socceroos face off against each other in Scotland and England.

Subway Socceroos

United Kingdom

Starting in Scotland, Aziz Behich could feature for Dundee United when they face off against Kye Rowles, Nathaniel Atkinson and Garang Kuol's Heart of Midlothian on Sunday at 2am (AEDT). Cameron Devlin is unlikely to feature due to an injury. 

Rowles and Kuol both started in a 3-0 loss to Rangers on Thursday. Rowles played another 90 while Kuol was substituted at half time in his first European start but surprisingly featured in midfield. 

Atkinson was an unused substitute while Devlin missed the match through an apparent hamstring issue. 

Aaron Mooy's Celtic will also be in action against Ryan McGowan's St Johnstone on Sunday at 11pm (AEDT). 

Mooy came off the bench in the 63rd minute in a 3-0 win against Livingston on Thursday to ensure a 23rd victory from 25 games this Scottish Premiership campaign. Celtic have now only lost once since September 2021.

Keanu Baccus and Ryan Strain are expected to feature when St Mirren face James Jeggo's Hibernian on Sunday at 2am (AEDT).

Baccus and Strain both registered assists and played 90 minutes as St Mirren beat Aberdeen 3-1 on Thursday, while Jeggo started and was substituted in the 78th minute as Hibs drew 1-1 with Ross County on Wednesday.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Dylan McGowan could start and contribute to a third consecutive clean sheet when his Championship side Hamilton Academical face Dundee on Sunday at 2am (AEDT).

The last time Hamilton had three successive clean sheets was almost three years ago.

Over to England, where Harry Souttar could debut in the Premier League for the first time when Leicester City travel to Aston Villa on Sunday at 2am (AEDT). 

Souttar completed a deadline-day move from Stoke City on Wednesday, signing a five-and-a-half-year contract and became the most expensive transfer fee paid for Australian, worth a reported A$26m.

In the Championship, Bailey Wright could also make his maiden appearance for Rotherham United when they host Sheffield United on Saturday at 11:30pm (AEDT). 

Wright secured a deadline-day switch from Sunderland to Rotherham United on loan until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Wright had accumulated just over 100 appearances in three years for the Black Cats and brings considerable experience to the Millers, with almost 400 games in English football, having previously represented Preston North End and Bristol City.

Riley McGree is also likely to feature for Middlesbrough as they look to secure back-to-back victories as they host Kenny Dougall's Blackpool on Sunday at 2am (AEDT).

Tom Rogic's West Bromwich Albion will also be in Championship action against Coventry on Saturday at 7am (AEDT).

Callum Elder of Hull City also meet Cardiff City on Sunday at 2am (AEDT) in the Championship.

In League One, Massimo Luongo could be in line to feature for Ipswich Town FC again in a clash with Cambridge United on Sunday at 2am (AEDT). 

Europe

Awer Mabil is a strong chance to feature for AC Sparta Prague again when they host FK Mladá Boleslav on Monday at 4am (AEDT) in the Czech First League. 

Mabil came off the bench to make his Sparta Prague debut in a 1-1 draw against SK Sigma Olomouc last weekend. Sparta currently sit in third position. 

Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe could be in line to appear for St Pauli again in the 2. Bundesliga against Hannover 96 on Sunday at 11:30pm (AEDT). 

The Socceroos pair started for St Pauli as the season resumed with an important 1-0 win against Nurnberg last weekend.


In the Netherlands, Maty Ryan is likely to start again for AZ Alkmaar when they host FC Volendam on Sunday at 4:45am (AEDT). 

In Serie B, Fran Karacic will probably be in action when Brescia Calcio tackle Perugia on Sunday at 12am (AEDT). 

Jason Davidson's KAS Eupen entertain Westerlo in the Belgian Pro League on Saturday at 4:15am (AEDT). 

In France's Ligue 1, Denis Genreau could be in line to make his first appearance after returning from injury when Toulouse FC travel to the French capital to encounter table toppers Paris Saint-Germain at 3am (AEDT) on Sunday. 

James Holland's FK Austria Wien also play FAC Team für Wien on Saturday at 1am (AEDT) in a friendly as they prepare for the Austrian Bundesliga to resume on February 13.

In Norway, Nick D'Agostino could make his first competitive appearance for Viking FK alongside Gianni Stensness when they face Halmstad in the Atlantic Up on Saturday at 4am (AEDT). 

Asia & The Middle East

Over to Qatar, Trent Sainsbury played another 90 minutes as Al-Wakrah SC lost Al-Sailiya SC 1-0 to Al-Duhail on Tuesday. Sainsbury could feature again when Al-Wakrah face Al-Gharafa on Sunday at 12:35am (AEDT). 

In the Israeli Premier League, Nikita Rukavytsya's Maccabi Haifa will be in action against Hapoel Hadera on Tuesday at 5:30am (AEDT). 

In Japan, Mitch Duke ramped up his preparation for the new J2 League season with 45 minutes in a training match for his new club FC Machida Zelvia on Wednesday. Machida begin their campaign on Febuary 19 against Vegalta Sendai. 

The United States

In transfer news, Alex Gersbach has joined MLS outfit Colorado Rapids on a three-year deal with a club option for an additional year for a reported transfer fee worth €300k (A$462k).

The defender arrives from Ligue 2 side Grenoble Foot 38, where he spent the previous 18 months there amassing 45 appearances.

Elsewhere in the US, Milos Degenek could get some pre-season minutes under his belt when Columbus Crew face Pittsburgh Riverhounds in a friendly on Sunday at 4:30am (AEDT). Columbus kick off their MLS campaign against Philadelphia on February 26. 

Brad Smith is also increasing his preparation for the upcoming MLS campaign with his new club Houston Dynamo. Smith missed most of the 2022 campaign with DC Unite due to an ACL injury, but the defender is back in training with his new club. 

Olyroos and Subway Young Socceroos

United Kingdom

In the English Championship, goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic could start again when Huddersfield take on Queens Park Rangers on Sunday at 2am (AEDT).

In League One, Caleb Watts may feature for Morecambe against Derby County on Sunday at 2am (AEDT).

In League two, Lachlan Brook's Crewe Alexandra take on Grimsby Town on Sunday at 2am (AEDT). Brook scored in a youth game on Wednesday as Crewe beat Nantwich Town 2-0 to book a place in the Semi-Finals of the Cheshire Senior Cup.

Elsewhere in Premier League 2, Matt Dench could feature when Charlton Athletic U21 face Colchester U21 on Wednesday at 12am (AEDT). 

In Scotland, Lewis Miller is a chance to play when Hibernian face St Mirren on Sunday at 2am (AEDT).

Europe

In Germany, Alou Kuol could receive more first-team minutes for VfB Stuttgart again when they face Werder Bremen on Monday at 1:30 am(AEDT) in the Bundesliga. 

Kuol appeared in the Bundesliga for the first time last weekend with a cameo off the bench and he was an unused substitute in the DFB-Pokal round of 16 on Wednesday as Stuttgart progressed with a last-minute 2-1 win over Paderborn. 


In the Netherlands, Josh Rawlins' Jong FC Utrecht travel to Heracles on Saturday at 6am (AEDT) in the Eerste Divisie. 

Dylan Ryan could also be in action in the Eerste Divisie when FC Den Bosch face TOP Oss on Saturday at 6am (AEDT). 

In Germany's 3. Liga, John Iredale could feature when SV Wehen Wiesbaden face Viktoria Koln on Sunday at 12am (AEDT). 

In transfer news, Patrick Yazbek will be joining Nick D'Agostino at Viking after the club announced his signing from Sydney FC. The midfielder will remain with the Sky Blues for the next three A-League Men's matches before moving abroad.

  • In Italy's Serie A, Cristian Volpato could feature for AS Roma when they face Empoli on Sunday at 4am (AEDT). Volpato started and played 45 minutes in Roma's 2-1 loss to Cremonese on Thursday.
  • In Serie B, Alessandro Circati could be in action when Parma face Genoa on Monday at 2:15am (AEDT).
  • In Greece, Apostolos Stamatelopoulos is a chance to feature for PAS Giannina against OFI Crete on Sunday at 2:00am (AEDT) in the Super League. 
  • In France's National 2, Mohamed Toure and Yaya Dukuly could feature for Stade Reims II when they face Boulogne on Saturday at 5:30am (AEDT). 
  • In Croatia, Anthony Kalik may appear for Hajduk Split against Rijeka on Monday at 3:30am (AEDT) in the Croatian First League.

United Kingdom

  • In the English Championship, Dean Bouzanis could feature when Reading face Watford on Sunday at 2am (AEDT). 
  • In League One, Cameron Burgess could play when Ipswich Town FC face Cambridge United on Sunday at 2am (AEDT). 
  • Elsewhere in League One, goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer could be in action for Charlton Athletic against Exeter City on Sunday at 2am (AEDT). 
  • In League Two, Tete Yengi has joined Northampton Town on loan from Ipswich Town.
  • In Premier League 2, Alexander Robertson could be in action when Manchester City U21 face Liverpool U21 on Sunday at 11pm (AEDT). 
  • In Scotland, Phillip Cancar could also feature for Livingston against Kilmarnock on Sunday at 2am (AEDT). 
  • Elsewhere in Scotland, Mark Birighitti's Dundee United face Hearts on Sunday at 2am (AEDT). Birighitti also started as United lost 1-0 to Kilmarnock on Thursday.

Asia

  • In some transfer news, Patrick Flottman has joined K League 2 outfit Seongnam FC. The 25-year-old defender arrives following a stint in India with NorthEast United.
