Aussies Abroad: Mabil records best scoring season, Degenek shines in Eternal Derby

Awer Mabil has made 2019/20 his career best goalscoring season with a strike in FC Midtjylland’s 3-0 win against SønderjyskE.

Mabil opened the scoring in the 21st minute to net his seventh Danish Superliga goal of the season, before efforts from Paulinho and Ronnie Schwartz saw the home side streak away at MCH Arena.

The Socceroos attacker's seven goals in 21 games so far in this campaign, beats the six goals he scored in 30 matches for the Jutland club last season. He also scored six for Adelaide United in the 2014/15 Hyundai A-League.

The win means the Wolves keep their nine-point cushion at the top of the competition standings following FC Copenhagen’s 3-2 win against AaB Aalborg as Mabil chases his first league winner’s medal.

FC Midtjylland missed out to title rivals Copenhagen by a single point in 2018/19 during the 24-year-old Aussie’s first full season in Danish side’s first team.

Meanwhile, in Turkey, Aziz Behich was on the bench as İstanbul Başakşehir claimed a 3-1 win against Gaziantep to go top of the Süper Lig, with starting left-back Gael Clichy among those on the scoresheet.

Another Socceroo surging towards a European league title, Milos Degenek played a key role in Red Star Belgrade keeping a clean sheet against crosstown rivals Partizan Belgrade in the Eternal Derby.

The traditional fireworks and flares burned as the Belgrade clubs played out a 0-0 stalemate in front of an intense atmosphere at Red Star Stadium, a result which keeps Degenek's Crvena Zvezda side clear at the top of the Serbian SuperLiga with an 11-point cushion after 24 matches.

Red Star are searching for a third straight championship in 2019/20, and a 31st national title in total, while rivals Partizan have 27 – while no other team has lifted the trophy in the past 22 years.
