Aussies Abroad: Luongo goal delivers another win for Sheffield Wednesday

Massimo Luongo has proved to be Sheffield Wednesday’s hero again, scoring the only goal as his side beat Stoke City 1-0 in the Championship on Wednesday morning.

The Caltex Socceroos midfielder got on the end of Stephen Fletcher’s flick on, capitalising on a defensive error before driving into the box and slotting his shot past compatriot Adam Federici in the Stoke goal.

It’s the second match in three games that Luongo has scored the match-winning goal for the Owls.

Earlier this month Luongo marked his first start for the club with a sensational strike as Wednesday overcame Wigan Athletic 1-0.

But the 27-year-old’s night was soured early in the second half when he was forced off with an injury after picking up a knock in a 50-50 challenge.

The victory has lifted Wednesday up to third spot on the Championship table, just three points behind leaders West Bromwich Albion.

Luongo will be hoping to shrug off his injury in time for Saturday night’s (10.30pm AEDT) blockbuster home clash against second-place Leeds United.

In the Champions League, Milos Degenek’s Red Star Belgrade suffered a crushing 5-0 loss to Tottenham in London.

Degenek played the full 90 minutes for the Serbian side who were outclassed by last season’s UCL finalists, with Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min both scoring doubles.

Mark Milligan’s Southend United had two players sent off as they lost 7-1 at home against Doncaster Rovers to remain in the relegation zone in League One.
