Aussies Abroad: Luongo's first Sheffield Wednesday goal proves decisive

Massimo Luongo marked his first start for Sheffield Wednesday by hitting the winning goal in a 1-0 Championship triumph against Wigan Athletic.

The Caltex Socceroos midfielder tucked away Adam Reach’s cut-back from the edge of the Latics area to break the deadlock in the 57th minute at Hillsborough.

Luongo had made five substitute appearances since his move from division rivals Queens Park Rangers and rewarded head coach Garry Monk's selection with the decisive strike.

Goalkeeper Kieren Westwood’s parried Kieffer Moore’s header on to the crossbar to ensure Wednesday clinched all three points.

Steven Fletcher’s late strike was flagged offside as Monk celebrated three wins in five games since replacing Newcastle United-bound Steve Bruce last month.

The victory lifts Wednesday up to eighth in the Championship table and Monk was impressed with his team’s commanding performance.

"We controlled the game enough to give us that lead and we did well and saw the game out,” Monk said.

The most important bit is another three points and a clean sheet going into the international break."

Bailey Wright remained on the substitutes bench as Bristol City edged Reading 1-0 thanks to Famara Diedhiou’s 12th-minute goal.

Lee Johnson’s Robins climb to sixth in the Championship as centre-back Wright continues his recovery from a thigh injury.

In League One, Harry Souttar’s Fleetwood Town went down 1-0 in a top-of-the-table clash against division leaders Ipswich Town at Highbury Stadium.

Kayden Jackson struck the only goal on 58 minutes, while the Tractor Boys saw James Wilson sent off in stoppage time, leaving the Trawlermen in third place.

Mark Milligan played 90 minutes for Southend United in their 3-1 reverse against Gillingham.

Goals either side of half-time by Alfie Jones and Stuart O’Keefe put the Gills two-goals ahead, before Simon Cox hit back for the Shrimpers.

A red card for Emile Acauah did not help the visitors’ cause and Brandon Hanlan secured the result late on at the Priestfield Stadium.

Langerak’s Nagoya earn late point

Shuhei Akasaki came to the rescue for Mitch Langerak’s Nagoya Grampus Eight with a stoppage time equaliser to earn a point against Oita Trinita.

Kazushi Mitsuhira fired the visitors ahead on 52 minutes but substitute Akasaki earned Langerak’s side a share of the J-League spoils in the 92nd minute.

Brandon Borello’s Freiburg SC showed their resilience, coming from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga.

Belgium international Axel Witsel and Morocco star Achraf Hakimi bagged for BVB either side of Luca Waldschmidt’s goal for Christian Streich’s men.

An 89th-minute own goal from Manuel Akanji salvaged a point for Freiburg, as Borello remained an unused substitute at the Dreisamstadion.
