Aussies Abroad: Irvine assists, Ryan's AZ on top, a Young Socceroo on target

Jackson Irvine continued his strong start to the 2 Bundesliga season with an assist in St Pauli's draw while Maty Ryan kept a clean sheet in another win as AZ Alkmaar climbed equal top in the Eredivisie.

Meanwhile, Awer Mabil made his debut in Switzerland and Kenny Dougall came off the bench to score the winner for Blackpool in League One.

Starting in Germany, where Jackson Irvine (cap #568) played a full match and assisted St Pauli's only goal in a 1-1 draw against  Eintracht Braunschweig on Saturday in the 2 Bundesliga. Irvine also boasted an 85% passing accuracy rating and made four recoveries. Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) also appeared as a substitute in stoppage time.

In Switzerland, Awer Mabil (cap #597) came off the bench at half time to make his debut for Grasshopper Club Zürich in a 2-1 loss to FC Stade Lausanne-Ouchy on Sunday.

He had an 89% pass completion rate and had one shot on target during his debut. 

Mabil recently signed a two-year contract with an option for a third after struggling to nail down regular game time over the past two years at Cadiz in Spain's La Liga.

In Scotland, Martin Boyle (cap #599) also played a full game alongside James Jeggo (cap #601) in Hibernian's 2-0 win over Aberdeen on Sunday. Olyroo Lewis Miller also played 90 minutes.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Kye Rowles (cap #622) played a full game alongside Nathaniel Atkinson (cap #620) while Cameron Devlin (cap #625) came off in the 72nd minute as Heart of Midlothian FC as lost 1-0 to Motherwell on Sunday. Atkinson produced a strong shift, making 12 recoveries and recorded a 100% tackle success rate.

Elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership, Keanu Baccus (cap #628) came off in the 80th minute while Ryan Strain (cap #624) played a full game for St Mirren as they continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-1 draw against Livingston on Sunday. 

Over to  England, where Riley McGree (cap #609) came off the bench in the 58th minute as Middlesbrough lost 2-0 to QPR in the Championship on Sunday. 

New Socceroos call up Sammy Silvera also played 90 minutes and put in another strong display with the most take-on attempts in the Middlesbrough side with seven and the highest completion rate with four. Tom Glover was on the bench. 


Massimo Luongo (cap 571) came off in the 75th minute while the recently called up Cameron Burgess played a full game for Ipswich Town in a 3-2 win over Cardiff City as they bounced back from defeat in the last Championship outing on Sunday.

In League One, Kenny Dougall (cap #608) came on in the 82nd minute and scored an injury-time winner for Blackpool as they beat Wigan Athletic 2-1 on Sunday. 

The win provided Blackpool with an important three points after a slow start to the League One campaign.


Alex Robertson (cap #630) came off the bench in the 90th minute for Portsmouth as they beat Peterborough United 3-1 in their return to League One action on Sunday. Subway Olyroo Nicholas Bilokapic was also in goal for Peterborough United.

Callum Elder (cap #614) started and played 75 minutes for Derby County in a 2-1 loss to Bolton on Sunday in League One.

Elsewhere in League One, Ashley Maynard-Brewer was on the bench for Charlton on Sunday in a 2-1 win over Fleetwood Town.

In the Netherlands, Maty Ryan (cap #555) was in goal and kept a clean sheet in the Eredivisie for AZ Alkmaar in a 2-0 win over Vitesse on Monday. AZ have opened the campaign with three wins in a row. 

Elsewhere, Garang Kuol (cap #627) came off in the 80th minute for Volendam FC in a 2-0 loss to FC Twente on Monday. It was the forward's first start for the club. 


In Serie B, Alessandro Circati played another 90 minutes for Parma as they continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 0-0 draw against rivals Reggiana on Sunday. Circati completed 91% of his passes and made 10 recoveries.

In the Belgian First Division, Aiden O'Neill (cap #629) played another full game for Standard Liege as they drew 1-1 with RWDM on Sunday. O'Neill has started every game of the season so far. 

Jason Davidson (cap #545) also played 87 minutes in Belgium as KAS Eupen lost 1-0 to Mechelen on Sunday. Eupen are sixth in the league. 

Denis Genreau (cap #610) came on in the 74th minute for Toulouse as they continued the Ligue 1 season with a 2-2 draw against Clermont Foot on Sunday. 

Milos Degenek (cap #585) was an unused substitute for FK Crvena Zvezda in Serbia as they beat Novi Pazar 2-1 on Sunday.

Over to Asia, where Mitch Langerak (cap #566) was in goal as Nagoya Grampus drew 1-1 with Yokohama FC on Saturday as returned to J1 League action.


Thomas Deng (cap #598) also returned to J1 League action on Saturday and played 90 minutes for Albirex Niigata in a 1-1 draw with Urawa Reds.

Mitch Duke (cap #559) came off in the 82nd minute in the J2 League on Sunday as Machida Zelvia drew 0-0 with Gunma.

In the K1 League, Harrison Delbridge (cap #623) played a full game for Incheon United in a 2-0 loss to fellow Aussie Alex Grant's Pohang Steelers on Saturday.

In India, Jason Cummings (cap #626) won the Durand Cup 2023 Final as 10-man Mohun Bagan defeated East Bengal 1-0 thanks to Dimitri Petratos' (cap #593) solitary goal.


In Major League Soccer, Brad Smith (cap #575) came off the bench in the 68th minute for Houston Dynamo in a 0-0 draw with LA Galaxy on Sunday.

Starting in League One, where Cameron Peupion came off the bench in the 76th minute to make his debut for Cheltenham Town in a 2-0 loss to Barnsley on Sunday. Peupion signed on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion during the week.

In the Premier League, Tyrese Francois was on the bench for Fulham in a 5-1 loss to Manchester City on Sunday. 

Nicholas Bilokapic was in goal for Peterborough United as they lost 3-1 to Alex Robertson's Portsmouth in League One on Sunday.

Nectarios Triantis was on the bench in the Championship for Sunderland on Saturday as they thumped Southampton 5-0.

Lewis Miller played a full game for Hibs in the Scottish Premiership on Monday in a 2-0 win over Motherwell.

Subway Young Socceroos/U18

Adrian Segecic started, played 68 minutes and scored a goal on debut in the Dutch Eerste Divisie for FC Dordrecht in a 4-2 win over FC Emmen on Sunday. He will spend the 2023/24 season on loan from Sydney FC.


In Norway, Keegan Jelacic was on the bench for  Stabæk Fotball in a 2-1 loss to Strømsgodset Toppfotball on Monday.

In transfer news, Rhys Youlley, who was part of the Australia U-18 that travelled to Portugal in June has signed with Jordan Bos' KVC Westerlo after a transfer fee was agreed with Macarthur FC

  • In Serie A, Cristian Volpato was an unused substitute for Sassuolo in a 3-1 win over Hellas Verona on Saturday.
  • In Germany's 2. Bundesliga, John Iredale came on in the 84th minute for SV Wehen Wiesbaden in a 1-1 draw with Schalke on Saturday. 
  • Tete Yengi played a full game and scored a goal in Finland for Kuopion Palloseura as they drew 2-2 with HJK on Sunday.
  • Zach Duncan was an unused substitute in Denmark for AGF Aarhus in a 1-1 draw with FC Midtjylland on Monday.
  • In Croatia, Anthony Kalik came on in the 78th minute for Hajduk Split in a 1-0 loss to NK Istra 1961 on Monday.
  • In the Swiss Challenge League, Liam Chipperfield played 67 minutes and scored a goal for FC Sion in a 1-1 draw with Baden on Saturday. It was his second goal in two matches for Sion.
  • In the J2 League, Stefan Mauk came on in the 56th minute and won the game for his Fagiano Okayama via a penalty in a 2-1 triumph over Iwaki on Sunday.
