Degenek's Red Star qualify for UEFA Champions League Group Stage

Caltex Socceroos defender Milos Degenek will be playing UEFA Champions League football this season after his Red Star Belgrade pipped Swiss outfit Young Boys to qualification on the away goals rule.

After the first leg in Switzerland finished 2-2 last week, Red Star drew Young Boys 1-1 in front of their home fans on Wednesday morning (AEST).

Aleksa Vukanović opened the scoring for Red Star in the 59th minute, before Young Boys equalised through Saidy Janko with less than 10 minutes to play.

Despite the two legs ending 3-3 on aggregate, Red Star's two away goals in the first leg sealed their spot in Europe’s top club competition for the second straight year.

Degenek played a key role in the Serbian club’s amazing achievement, scoring his first-ever goal for Red Star in last week’s draw on the road, a result which played a huge role in their qualification.

It's also exactly one year ago to the day when the Australia defender provided two crucial assists to help Red Star Belgrade come back from a two-goal deficit and overcome Red Bull Salzburg to qualify for the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League Group Stage.

It means Degenek has now qualified for a third Champions League competition over two continents (Europe and Asia) all within one year, after also reaching the ACL with Saudi club Al Hilal earlier this year.
