Back in 1954, Austria defeated tournament hosts Switzerland 7-5 in their World Cup quarter final at La Pontaise in Lausanne.

Dubbed Hitzeschlacht von Lausanne (roughly translated to ‘The heat battle of Lausanne-) due to the game being played in sweltering temperatures, the contest saw a player from both sides score hat-tricks, Theodor Wagner for the victors and Josef Hugi for the hosts.

In a remarkable encounter, Switzerland found themselves 3-0 up inside the opening 20 minutes before Wagner pegged a goal back five minutes later which triggered a five goal Austrian avalanche in the space of nine minutes.

Suddenly 5-3 down, the Swiss scored again to trail by a goal at the break before Wagner-s third restored the Austrians two-goal buffer. Both sides scored once more to end the goal fest, the result still to this day standing as the most number of goals scored by two teams in a World Cup match against each other.

For the record, Germany won the tournament with Austria finishing third.

At the FIFA 2014 World Cup, Switzerland is in Group E alongside Ecuador, France and Honduras, while Austria failed to qualify.
