Toure surprised after ‘shock’ Socceroos debut
Mohamed Toure was included as a train-on for the October window, and it was anticipated he would do little more than soak up the Socceroos experience.
However, as the Subway Socceroos' Wembley outing wound down, pursuing an equaliser, Graham Arnold turned to the teenager.
“I was extremely surprised because I was just sitting watching the boys play, and then the boss told me to go warm up,” Toure told Socceroos.com.au.
Moments later, 19-year-old Toure made his Socceroos debut, tasked with getting the team back on level terms with European giants England.
He said it was a special and emotional moment in his career, eager to heap gratitude on his parents.
“It’s a special moment for me and my family. Growing up in the country, watching the boys at home, watching them in the World Cup as well. It just means so much to be a part of the team now,” Toure explained.
“A lot of emotions. I can’t really describe the feeling. It was just joy - I’m doing what I love. One of the most iconic stadiums in the world against a good England side, so I just wanted to come on and play, to be honest.
“I didn’t have long, so I just wanted to enjoy the moment.
“You have to thank your parents, the struggles they go through when you’re younger to get us to playing.
“Sometimes we forget where it all started and who actually put in the work from the start.”
Toure’s energetic cameo couldn’t get Australia the equaliser they craved, losing 1-0 despite a strong display from the side.
A series of crucial defensive interventions, as well as the woodwork, kept Australia scoreless, but Toure said the team should still be proud of their performance.
“We had a lot of chances, but it’s just one of those days where the ball doesn’t hit the net,” he said.
“But it was a great team performance to come away in England and play against England like that.
“The boys should hold their heads high.”
