Social media reacts to Maty Ryan's 'impressive' Arsenal debut

Maty Ryan's dream debut may have seen him get off to a less-than-ideal start, but the Socceroos goalkeeper was still labelled one of Arsenal's best following their 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday.

After conceding an unfortunate deflected effort after just 74 seconds, Ryan bounced back to make an impressive seven saves.

Ollie Watkins' early strike may have seen saw him become the fourth keeper to concede inside two minutes of their full Premier League debut, but come full time, the English press and Arsenal fans delivered a glowing appraisal of the Aussie shot-stopper's first showing for his boyhood club.

The Evening Standard labelled Ryan as Arsenal's 'star man', awarding him an 8/10 rating for the match.

They reported that there was "little he could do about the Villa goal - which took a deflection off Rob Holding. Had a good game after that and made a few strong saves. Good debut."

Similarly, The Daily Mirror claimed Ryan "looked confident and competent in everything he did. No chance with Watkins's strike."

Arsenal fans voted via the BBC that Ryan was Arsenal's best player on the day, while his Sofa Score statistical rating of 8.1 was the best out of any player on the Villa Park pitch.

In a similar showing of support that emerged following the announcement of his signing last month, Ryan's Instagram was flooded with messages of congratulations after his debut.

Arsenal fans and football pundits also took to Twitter to share their first impressions of Ryan in a Gunners shirt.

Eagle-eyed supporters spotted a quick pre-game handshake with legendary Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who was one of the few spectators in attendance at the ground.

Arsenal next face Leeds United in the Premier League before the first leg of their Europa League Round of 32 tie with Portuguese giants Benfica.

It was announced last week that Ryan had been included in Mikel Arteta's squad for the remainder of the continental competition.
