Socceroos shoot-out hero joins The Wiggles

Socceroos goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne has teamed up with The Wiggles and been given an honorary Wiggles’ membership to the world’s most famous children’s entertainment group.

After seeing Redmayne’s now famous Wiggle dance during the penalty shoot-out against Peru, in the FIFA World Cup 2022TM intercontinental play-off, The Wiggles invited the man affectionately known as the “Grey Wiggle” to perform with them in some videos for their YouTube channel.

Red Wiggle Simon Pryce said he’s been following the Socceroos for many years now and was on the edge of his seat, like most Australian’s during the final stages of the memorable play-off against Peru.

“To save that last penalty was unbelievable and the way in which he did it was brilliant. It was an iconic moment in sport, so we approached him and invited him in with the honorary title of the Grey Wiggle,” he said.

Redmayne, who used “The Wiggles dance” during the penalty shoot-out said the unorthodox moves were well rehearsed, having used them before in the Isuzu UTE A-League Men’s.

“I never thought I’d be taking The Wiggles dance to the world stage, but I’m glad it worked. It was a team effort and I just played a small role in what was a four-year campaign to achieve this objective of qualifying for Australia’s sixth FIFA World CupTM,” he said.

Redmayne, who has an 18-month-old daughter Poppy, is always watching the world-famous The Wiggles at home and said the invitation was too good to pass up.

“The Wiggles are on my television at home all day, so it’s a bit surreal, recording songs which I know back to front, with these guys.”

As is tradition after an international football match, Redmayne swapped jerseys with The Wiggles after the session was done:

“It fits well, I think I can play in this, perhaps I can wear it underneath my official shirt so I can take a bit of Wiggle-power with me next time I play,” he said.

Redmayne has been included in the Socceroos squad for the upcoming internationals against New Zealand and is fighting for a spot in the FIFA World CupTM squad.

“I’m under no illusion about my ticket to Qatar. But I’m aiming to perform well over the next few months to prove what I’m capable of,” he said.
