Socceroos encourage you to get Onside with AsOne FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 bid

The Socceroos are encouraging supporters to get Onside and support the joint FIFA Women’s World Cup bid between Australia and New Zealand.

FIFA will announce the host of the 2023 tournament on June 25, so make sure to sign up before then and show your support to get the bid over the line.

The FIFA World Cup is the pinnacle of football and the chance to have one on home soil does not come around often.

In a recent Instagram Live Q&A, current Socceroos, Aziz Behich and Trent Sainsbury, spoke in support of the AsOne bid.

“The Matildas have been one of the dominant forces in women’s football over the last few years,” said Behich in the Q&A.

“We’ve got a lot of great players and a few are now in England. I think it’ll be great for Australian Football as a whole.”

48-cap defender Sainsbury echoed his teammate’s sentiment, saying that hosting would do a lot for everyone involved with football in Australia.

“For women, men and for all the aspiring kids out there, it will be amazing to have it on home soil,” he said.

Behich and Sainsbury are not the only ones behind the bid with Socceroos legends Mark Schwarzer, John Aloisi and Mile Sterjovski coming out in support of the bid.

"I'm Onside because it gives an opportunity to excite the next generation of young boys and girls to take up football," said Schwarzer.

Having played in FIFA World Cups themselves the trio explained just how big it is to be part of a FIFA World Cup and what it would mean to have it on home soil.

“I believe Australia and New Zealand will make the best hosts in 2023 as our world class facilities and our infrastructure will allow the players to perform at their best,” said Aloisi.

“It would be incredible to host in 2023. The Women's World Cup will get the whole country excited about football as we’ll see our amazing Matildas take on the world’s best right here at home. It will also inspire our next generation of girls and boys playing football.”

A member of the legendary FIFA World Cup 2006 squad, Sterjovski said that the event is the pinnacle of football and that Australia has proven its ability to host major sporting events.

“It brings the best players and teams together for the world to see, that’s what makes it so special. It was my dream as a young kid to play for Australia in a World Cup,” said Sterjovski.

“Being able to do so in 2006 was probably my biggest honour in the green and gold. It’s a memory that will always have a special place in my heart.”

“We have proven in the past that we are great hosts of major sporting events including The 2000 Olympics and 2015 AFC Asian Cup to name a few and we can create an even better stage for each and every player to be able to perform at their best.

“Hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup together with New Zealand would bring the World Game to a new level in both countries and give a massive boost to our domestic game.”
