Socceroos duo earn top PFA Players' Awards

Socceroos duo Jamie Maclaren and Connor Metcalfe have this evening been named PFA Men's Player of the Year and PFA Men's Young Player of the Year respectively.

The pair, who are club teammates at Melbourne City, were both members of the Socceroos' squad in June off the back of outstanding seasons in the A-League.

Both were members of PFA's Team of the Season, and Maclaren was twice named Player of the Month for his deadly form in the final third, which saw him scored 25 goals in 24 games.

Maclaren was nominated for the Men's Player of the Year award alongside fellow Socceroos Curtis Good, Nikita Rukavytsya and Martin Boyle, and joins esteemed company as a first-time recipient.

Both Mat Ryan and Aaron Mooy are three-time winners, while Tim Cahill, Mark Schwarzer, Mile Jedinak, Robbie Kruse, Matt Mackay and Brett Holman have all received the same recognition since it was established in 2009.

Speaking of Socceroos royalty, Connor Metcalfe's Men's Young Player of the Year award sees him claim the PFA Harry Kewell Medal.

The midfielder, who started every single Melbourne City match prior to jetting off for Socceroos camp, beat out his Olyroos teammates Marco Tilio, Denis Genreau and Joel King to the award.

He joins a list of medal winners including Socceroos Chris Ikonomidis, Daniel Arzani, Alex Gersbach, Jamie Maclaren, Mat Ryan, Robbie Kruse, Mitch Langerak  and Nikita Rukavytska.
