Socceroos Club Watch: McGree, Goodwin, Maclaren & Kuol score ahead of World Cup

A number of our Subway Socceroos have signed off from club duties in the best possible way with goals and assists as they prepare to jet off to Qatar for the FIFA World Cup.

Subway Socceroos Abroad

United Kingdom

Starting in England, where Riley McGree scored a wonder goal to equalise in Middlesbrough's 2-1 win over Norwich City on Sunday.

McGree started and played 89 minutes but he stole the show with a left-footed scissor kick in the 64th minute which left the Carrow Road crowd stunned into silence while the Boro players and fans were euphoric.

The result leaves Boro in 14th position ahead of the World Cup break.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Bailey Wright started for the fourth consecutive time and played 90 minutes as Sunderland beat Birmingham City 2-1 on Saturday. The result leaves Sunderland in 15th position ahead of the World Cup break

In Scotland, Cameron Devlin started and played 62 minutes as Heart of Midlothian secured a 97th minute equaliser to snatch a point against Livingston on Sunday. 

Kye Rowles also started the match but he was sent off in the 75th minute after a VAR review for a shirt pull. Nathaniel Atkinson was an unused substitute. 

The result leaves Hearts in fifth position in the SPFL as they head into the World Cup break.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Aziz Behich started and played 90 minutes as Dundee United lost 1-0 against Aberdeen on Sunday. The result moves Dundee United into last position as they head into the World Cup break. 

Keanu Baccus came off the bench in the 78th minute as St Mirren drew 1-1 against Rangers on Saturday. The point leaves St Mirren in seventh position in the SPFL.

Aaron Mooy was also an unused substitute as Celtic beat Ross County 2-1 on Sunday. The Hoops are undefeated in their last seven matches in the SPFL and hold a nine-point lead over Rangers at the top of the table.

Europe

Starting in Germany, where Jackson Irvine started and played 90 minutes as St. Pauli drew 4-4 with Karlsruher in a frenetic game on Saturday. The result leaves St. Pauli in 14th position as they head into the World Cup break.

In Spain, Awer Mabil started and played 77 minutes as Cádiz CF lost 3-2 to Real Unión Club on Monday in the Copa Del Rey First Round.

In Italy's Serie A, Ajdin Hrustic was an unused substitute as Hellas Verona lost 2-1 to Spezia on Monday.

In Denmark, Mat Ryan was also an unused substitute as FC Copenhagen beat AGF 2-1 on Monday.

Elsewhere in Denmark, Joel King was an unused substitute as Odense Boldklub drew 3-3 with Horsens on Monday. Odense are fifth in the Danish Superliga in a Championship Round place as they head into the World Cup break.

Subway Socceroos in A-League Action

In the A-League Men, Craig Goodwin signed off for the World Cup by scoring a penalty and registering an assist as he led Adelaide United to a 3-0 win over Melbourne Victory at Coopers Stadium on Friday night. 

Goodwin scored from the penalty spot in the 84th minute to give Adelaide a comfortable 2-0 lead over Victory before he delivered a pinpoint dead-ball cross for Ben Warland’s debut Reds’ goal in stoppage time to seal a 3-0 win.

Elsewhere in the A-League Men, Mathew Leckie and Jamie Maclaren both started and played 90 minutes as Melbourne City continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 win over the Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday.

Leckie was named player of the match while Maclaren scored the winner early in the second half for an eighth goal in six matches. He has scored in every one of City's A-League Men matches this season.


Andrew Redmayne also played 90 minutes in goal for Sydney FC as they lost 1-0 to the Western Sydney Wanders in the Sydney Derby at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.

On Sunday, Danny Vukovic and Jason Cummings started and played 90 minutes as Central Coast Mariners lost 3-2 against  Macarthur on Sunday at Central Coast Stadium.

However, it was Garang Kuol who stole the show yet again. 

Kuol came off the bench in the 55th minute and buried a second penalty after Cummings had a spot kick saved three minutes earlier. 

In the 72nd minute, the 18-year-old brought down a cross from Jacob Farrell brilliantly, before picking his spot and smashing the ball beyond Nick Suman to bag his second goal of the match. 


While Kuol inspired his side with another impressive performance off the bench, it was not enough as the Mariners lost to a 95th minute Macarthur winner.
