Socceroos Abroad: Hrustic v Ryan, Aussies meet in Scotland

There were some important games for Aussies across Europe and Asia during the week while Socceroos face off against each other in Scotland this weekend.

Subway Socceroos

Starting in the Eredivisie, where Mathew Ryan (cap #555) was in goal for AZ Alkmaar as they lost 5-0 to Ajdin Hrustic (cap #589)'s Heracles Almelo on Thursday. Hrustic started and played 83 minutes.

AZ face league leaders PSV on Sunday at 2:45am (AEST) while Heracles travel to Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday at 1am (AEST). 

Also in the Dutch top flight, Garang Kuol (cap #627) was an unused substitute for FC Volendam on Friday in a 0-0 draw with Feyenoord. He could feature again on Monday at 12:45am (AEST) when they host RKC Waalwijk. 

Over to Saudia Arabia, where Craig Goodwin (cap #562) was also involved in midweek action on Wednesday as he put in a 90-minute shift for Al-Wehda in a 2-1 win over Al Feyha. 

It was the side's first win in nine matches and they will be hoping to build on that when they face third-placed Al-Ahli Saudi FC on Saturday at 6am (AEDT). 

Also in the competition, Aziz Behich (cap #547) remains a doubt for Al Nassr’s clash with Damac at the same time. 

Mitchell Duke (cap #559) came off the bench in the 80th minute for Machida Zelvia in the J. League on Wednesday in a 2-1 loss to Sanfrecce. It was Machida's first loss of the season.

They face Kawasaki on Sunday at 4pm (AEST). 

Also in the competition, Thomas Deng (cap #598) played a full game for Albirex Niigata on Wednesday in a 2-0 loss to Jubilo Iwata.

They return to J1 action on Sunday at 3pm (AEST) against Cerezo Osaka. 

Elsewhere, Mitchell Langerak (cap #566) was Nagoya Grampus's goalkeeper on Wednesday as they beat Consadole Sapporo 2-1.

They face Avispa Fukuoka on Sunday at 4pm (AEST). 

In Thailand, Kenny Dougall (cap #608) played another full game for Buriram United on Thursday in the Thai Premier League as they drew 1-1 with BG Pathum United to remain top of the league.

They face Prachuap on Saturday at 11pm (AEDT). 

Starting in the English Premier League, Joe Gauci (cap #631) was on the bench for Aston Villa as they lost 4-1 to Manchester City on Wednesday. He could be on the bench again when they host Brentford on Sunday at 1am (AEST). 

In the EFL Championship, Samuel Silvera (cap #634) should be involved when Middlesbrough host Swansea City on Sunday at 1am (AEST). Tom Glover is also likely to be the reserve goalkeeper.

Michael Carrick's side have their sights on the top six after a six-matches without a loss. However, they will have to continue the season without Riley McGree (cap #609), who has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2023/24 season after suffering a foot issue while on international duty with Australia.

Elsewhere in England’s second tier, Cameron Burgess (cap #633) and Massimo Luongo (cap #571) could start when Ipswich Town play away to Norwich City on Saturday at 10:30pm (AEDT).

Ipswich are one point ahead of Leeds United at the top of the table and two points in front of Leicester City, having played one game more.

Also, Harry Souttar's (cap #606) Leicester City host Birmingham City on Sunday at 1am (AEST).

In EFL League One, Kusini Yengi (cap #638) should get some minutes for Portsmouth when they host Shrewsbury Town on Sunday at 1am (AEST).

Last weekend's draw kept Pompey five points clear of Derby at the top of the table and nine ahead of third-placed Bolton with just five games to play.

Also in League One, Gethin Jones (cap #639) should start at the same time when Bolton travel to Bristol Rovers.

Over to Scotland, where Keanu Baccus (cap #628) and Ryan Strain (cap #624) will hope to earn a start for St Mirren when they host Hearts’ trio Cameron Devlin (cap #625), Nathaniel Atkinson (cap #620) and Kye Rowles (cap #622) on Sunday at 1am (AEST).

Strain made his return from injury for St Mirren last weekend and will be targeting more minutes this outing. It had been a long road back for the 27-year-old having been on the sidelines since November after suffering a serious groin injury while on Socceroos duty.

St Mirren will look to solidify their position in the top six while Hearts will hope to sure up third position. 

Elsewhere, Lewis Miller (cap #635), Martin Boyle (cap #599) and Olyroo Nectarios Triantis could be involved for Hibernian as they face Ryan McGowan (cap #546)'s St Johnstone on Sunday at 1am (AEST).

In Scotland’s League One, Dylan McGowan (cap #590) should get another start for Hamilton Academical on Sunday at 1am (AEST) as the side look to bounce back from last week's draw against Annan Athletic.

In Germany's 2. Bundesliga, Jackson Irvine (cap #568) and Connor Metcalfe (cap #611) could both start for St. Pauli as they host sixth-placed Karlsruher on Sunday at 4:30am (AEST), looking to maintain their lead at the top and edge closer to promotion. 

John Iredale (cap #640) could also be in action in the German second division for Wehen Wiesbaden, taking on Hansa on Saturday at 3:30am (AEDT).

In Belgium’s First Division A relegation round, Jason Davidson (cap #545) should feature for KAS Eupen when they face Kortrijk on Monday at 12am (AEST). 

In injury news, Standard Liege's Aiden O’Neil (cap #629) season looks likely to be over after suffering an ankle injury while Jordan Bos (cap #632) is also expected to be sidelined for six weeks.

Alessandro Circati (cap #637) is likely to start on Saturday at 11pm (AEDT) in Serie B for Parma as they face FC Südtirol.

In France's Ligue 1, Denis Genreau (#610) could feature again for Toulouse FC when they host Strasbourg on Sunday at 11pm (AEST). 

In Ligue 2, Mohamed Toure (#636) will aim to continue his return with more minutes for Paris FC on Sunday at 3am (AEST) when they host Grenoble Foot 38. He came off the bench last weekend for his first minutes since February.

Fran Karacic (cap #607) could get some game time for Rudes in their match against NK Osijek on Saturday at 1:30am (AEDT) in Croatia 1. Division.

Alex Gersbach (cap #587) could get more minutes in Sweden's Allsvenskan for Kalmar FF on Tuesday at 3am (AEST), as they look to bounce back from an opening day defeat against Sirius.  

James Holland (cap #508) might play for Austria Wien in the Austrian Bundesliga relegation play-offs, where they host Austria Lustenau on Sunday at 2am (AEST).

Jason Cummings (cap #626) and Dimitri Petratos (cap #593) will look to continue their form for Mohun Bagan SG when they travel to Punjab FC on Saturday at 10:30pm (AEDT) in the Indian Super League.

Brad Smith (cap #575) will look to make an impact for Houston Dynamo on Sunday at 10:30am (AEST) against Chicago in Major League Soccer. 

Trent Sainsbury’s (cap #574) Al Wakrah face Al Arabi on Saturday at 5:30am (AEDT) in Qatar Stars League.

Patrick Yazbek (cap #641) and Nick D'Agostino (cap #621) could be back in the Viking team for their clash with FK Bodø/Glimt on Sunday morning at 3am (AEST) in the Norwegian Eliteserien. Gianni Stensness (cap #617) is still out with a knee injury suffered in June 2023 but is working toward a reported return date of late April.

In K League 1, Harrison Delbridge’s (cap #623) Incheon United return to action on Saturday at 6:30pm (AEDT) when they host Jeju.

Subway Olyroos

Starting in the English Premier League, Cameron Peupion was on the bench as Brighton and Hove Albion drew 0-0 with Brentford on Thursday. He will be hoping to get some minutes when Brighton host Arsenal on Sunday at 2:30am (AEST). 

In the Danish Superligaen, Tyrese Francois played another full game on Wednesday for Vejle Boldklub in a 1-0 win over OB. He is likely to feature again on Sunday at 10pm (AEST) when they host Viborg. 

Louis D'Arrigo came off the bench in the 81st minute for Lechia Gdansk on Wednesday as they beat Odra Opole 2-1 in Polish I Liga. They return to action on Sunday at 11pm (AEST) against GKS Katowice.

As mentioned above, Alexandar Popovic also played another full game for Gwangju on Wednesday in the K League 1 in a 3-2 loss to Incheon United. 

They face Gimcheon Sangmu FC on Saturday at 6:30pm (AEDT). 

As mentioned in Scotland, Nectarios Triantis should play for Hibernian when they face McGowan's St Johnstone on Sunday at 1am (AEST).

Calem Nieuwenhof could be the sixth Aussie to be involved alongside the quintet of Socceroos (see above) if he makes his return from injury when Hearts visit St Mirren on Sunday at 1am (AEST).

In the Netherlands, FC Dordrecht face De Graafschap in Eerste Divisie where Adrian Segecic has made a string of substitute appearances in recent months and should feature again on Saturday at 5:00am AEDT.

Rhys Youlley should feature once again for K.V.C. Westerlo U21 against RWD Molenbeek U21 at 5:00am AEDT on Saturday. Westerlo U21 are currently three points clear at the top of the Belgian Pro League U21 table.

Nicholas Bilokapic looks set to be on the bench again for Peterborough United on Monday at 1:30am (AEST) against Wycombe in the Football League Trophy final.

Jahce Novello could be on the bench for Cosenza in Serie B when for their clash with Feralpisalò on Saturday at 11pm (AEDT).

Subway Young Socceroos

In Italy, Sebastian Esposito could feature again for U.S. Lecce under-19 when they face Sassuolo under-19 on Saturday at 8pm (AEDT).
