Caltex Socceroos defender Trent Sainsbury is a free agent after announcing he’s cut ties with Chinese club Jiangsu Suning.
In a decision supported by Professional Footballers Australia (PFA), Sainsbury has terminated his contract over what is believed to be a pay dispute.
Sainsbury played 34 times for Jiangsu, with most of those appearances coming in 2016 when he first signed with the club from Dutch side PEC Zwolle.
In the years following though Sainsbury has gone on loan spells to Italian giants Inter Milan and Swiss club Grasshoppers. It’s been an interrupted period which has seen him play more international games (17) than domestic ones (15) since the beginning of last year.
The question now though, is where to for Sainsbury?
The rumour mill is in full swing, with most pointing to a move to London club QPR to play in the English Championship alongside Aussie midfielder Massimo Luongo.
Another switch which has been mooted is one back to the Netherlands. He could be in line to make the switch to PSV Eindhoven, where a former member of the Australia coach staffing, Mark van Bommel, is head coach.
Wherever it is though, Sainsbury will want any move to be finalised quickly. The AFC Asian Cup is fast approaching, and while the defender is key to the Australian backline he’ll be keen to remind Graham Arnold just how good he is.
