Sainsbury: Why the Socceroos are "relaxed and energised" ahead of Oman

Socceroos defender Trent Sainsbury believes Australia's high-quality preparation will give them an added boost in the build-up to Wednesday's World Cup Qualifier in Oman.

Australia's players and staff were afforded a chartered flight directly to Oman following their 4-0 drubbing of Vietnam in Melbourne on Thursday.

"I slept for most of the flight and went straight through customs," explained Sainsbury.

"The sooner you get your feet on the ground in the country you are playing in, the better."

The chartered flight allowed an extra day's preparation than usual, something Australia Coach Graham Arnold was thrilled with earlier in the week and Sainsbury was of the same opinion.

"It honestly does give you that extra recovery time, time to settle and allow the body to adjust to the time zone," he said.

The Socceroos' revitalised squad will become even more energetic with the arrivals of Aziz Behich and Ajdin Hrustic.

Sainsbury was excited to welcome his teammates back into the group and expects them to play an integral role against Oman.

"They (Behich and Hrustic) look really fresh in training and will be key for us getting a result in such an important game."

Australia sit third in Group B with three games remaining to secure automatic qualification for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.

Sainsbury is fully aware how pivotal these next few matches are so the importance of pre and post match preparation has been crucial.

"We are feeling relaxed and energized," explained Sainsbury.

"We trained today on a nice pitch and in beautiful weather; we couldn't have asked for much more to be honest."

Following Tuesday's match against Oman, Australia host Japan on March 24 before finishing against Saudi Arabia a few days later on March 29.

To qualify directly, Australia must finish either first or second in Group B while a third-place finish would send the Socceroos to a play-off against the third-place team from Group A, followed by an intercontinental play-off.
