Ryan and Souttar pick up February awards

Socceroos stars Mat Ryan and Harry Souttar have both been rewarded for their sparkling form in February.

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Ryan’s display in the 1-1 draw against Premier League high-fliers Sheffield United earned him the Porsche Performance of the Month gong.

The Socceroos number one beat out impressive showings from Glenn Murray and Solly March in the Seagulls’ 3-3 draw against West Ham, gathering 42% of the fan’s vote.

Meanwhile, Souttar was recognised by the English Football League as the Young Player of the Month for February.

The 21-year-old, who has scored four goals in his two Socceroos caps, starred as Fleetwood Town went undefeated during six matches to leave the Cod Army in seventh place and poised for a League One playoff charge.

Souttar netted the winning goal in the 2-1 win against Doncaster to kick-start the unbeaten month as Fleetwood conceded only four goals in six matches.

“It’s nice to be recognised for your performances over in the league,” Souttar told socceroos.com.au

“We’re on a pretty decent run at the moment – claiming 19 points from 21 was a positive step for us in our promotion push.

“We’ve got quite a young back three and all three of us could have been up for the award.

“The two lads in front of us with the experience – Glenn Whelan and the captain Paul Coutts – is fantastic for us young lads at the back to be learning from.

“Whenever we need something or to ask a question, they will always be there for us.

“It can’t just go to one player in my opinion, it’s for the whole back four – the three centres and the goalie behind us, [Alex] Cairns, who has kept us in a lot of games this season.”
