Russia Wrap: Eight eliminated, six confirmed for Round of 16

The FIFA World Cup™ is down to the final round of group games to determine who will make it through to the Round of 16.

With Group A and B kicking off their final round of games on Tuesday morning AEST, a total of six teams have already booked their spot in the next stage.

There are also eight teams who have confirmed their exits from Russia before the final game, with 18 teams still in the balance to continue their dreams.

Here’s the Group Equations for every FIFA World Cup™ group, following the overnight results.

GROUP A

Through to the Round of 16: Russia, Uruguay

Already eliminated: Egypt, Saudi Arabia

Russia and Uruguay will face off on Tuesday morning to determine who tops Group A, with both teams picking up maximum points against Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Russia currently edge out Uruguay, having scored more goals than any other nation at the FIFA World Cup™ so far.

GROUP B

Through to the Round of 16: none

Down to the wire: Spain, Portugal, Iran

Already eliminated: Morocco

Morocco have already been eliminated from the FIFA World Cup™, which leaves three teams to battle for two places in the Round of 16.

Spain and Portugal (both four points) remain favourites to progress, ahead of Iran (three points). Portugal can guarantee their status in the next stage by beating or drawing with Iran, while Spain face Morocco.

GROUP C

Through to the Round of 16: France

Down to the wire: Denmark, Australia

Already eliminated: Peru

France are guaranteed in the Round of 16 having beaten Australia and Peru. Denmark currently occupy second spot in the group but face France in the final game.

Should the Socceroos beat Peru in their final game, and Denmark lose to France then second spot in the group will be determined by either goal difference, goals scored or Fair Play tie-breakers.

GROUP D

Through to the Round of 16: Croatia

Down to the wire: Nigeria, Iceland, Argentina

Already eliminated: none

Croatia have already guaranteed progress to the Round of 16 with wins over Nigeria and Argentina and will almost certainly top the group, unless Nigeria beat Argentina by enough to overturn a +5 goal difference.

For Argentina to progress, Lionel Messi’s side will need to beat Nigeria and hope Croatia beat or draw with Iceland.

GROUP E

Through to the Round of 16: none

Down to the wire: Brazil, Switzerland, Serbia

Already eliminated: Costa Rica

Any two from Brazil, Switzerland and Serbia can still progress through Group E.

Switzerland can guarantee progress through to the Round of 16 if they can defeat the already eliminated Costa Rica. Meanwhile, Brazil and Serbia battle it out in the final group game where the winner will progress. If Brazil and Serbia draw, Brazil will progress with one more point.

GROUP F

Through to the Round of 16: none

Down to the wire: Mexico, Germany, Sweden, South Korea

Already eliminated: none

Toni Kroos’ incredible 95th minute winner for Germany has left Group F in the balance heading into the final round of games. All four teams are still mathematically alive.

Mexico are on six points but even they aren’t guaranteed a spot in the Round of 16 yet!

Three teams – Mexico, Sweden and Germany – could end up on six points should Germany beat South Korea and Sweden beat Mexico.

There could also be three teams tied on three points – Germany, Sweden and South Korea – should Mexico beat Sweden and South Korea beat Germany.

Whatever the result in the final two games, Group F will be decided by one of FIFA’s seven tie-breaker rules.

GROUP G

Through to the Round of 16: England, Belgium

Down to the wire: none

Already eliminated: Tunisia, Panama

England and Belgium are already through to the Round of 16, with top spot to be determined by the result when the two sides meet on Friday morning AEST.

The winner of Group G is set to face the runner up of Group F, with the runner up of Group G to face the winner of Group F.

GROUP H

Through to the Round of 16: none

Down to the wire: Japan, Senegal, Colombia

Already eliminated: Poland

Poland were the top seeds in Group H but were eliminated after their 3-0 loss to Colombia.

That result leaves Japan and Senegal locked on four points, with Colombia just behind on three points.

Should Japan beat Poland in their final game, they will progress. The other team to go through would be determined by the winner of Senegal v Colombia.
