Rogic 'enjoying the moment' for club and country

Tom Rogic translated his stunning Celtic form into Socceroos stardom, registering a goal and assist in Australia's 4-0 win over Vietnam on Thursday night.

Rogic found the back of the net within the opening minute, to set the Socceroos fans wild at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

While the goal was disallowed for an offside blocker, Rogic didn’t let that dent his confidence, as he continued his sumptuous style, lofting a pinpoint ball to the unmarked Jamie Maclaren inside the area, with the Melbourne City man making no mistake in finishing.

Rogic then doubled Australia’s advantage on the verge of halftime, bursting in behind Vietnam’s backline before dinking the ball over the goalkeeper’s outstretched gloves.

“We knew the significance of the game, in terms of the qualification,” said Rogic following the result against Vietnam.

“I think it was a good performance from the team in general.

“We got a little bit sloppy in the second half, but overall I think it’s a good days work and I was just happy to be back playing in Australia.

“It’s been a couple of years before I’ve seen family and friends and there was a few in the crowd so I was happy to be back and enjoyed the night.”

Rogic played out a classy 74 minutes, deservedly picking up the player of the match award for his efforts.

“I think we were in control for the whole match, there’s no doubt about that”, said Rogic on the performance against Vietnam.

“We created a lot of chances and I don’t think the scoreline flatters us.

“Maty Ryan had one save to make and it was a good one, but he’s done that throughout the whole qualification.

It was an enjoyable night, to be back playing in Australia with family friends around in a beautiful stadium and a beautiful pitch.

“We felt the crowd behind us.”

Rogic has picked up from where he left off in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic, where he has registered two goals and five assists in his last seven games.

He has established himself as a key creative player in Australian Ange Postecoglou’s side, which has proved crucial for their title hopes.

“Personally I’m in a good moment, I’m enjoying things and I’m enjoying my life on and off the field”, he said.

Meanwhile, the Socceroos currently sit one point behind rivals Japan in second and five behind Saudi Arabia in first, as the Green and Gold look to secure automatic qualification for the FIFA World Cup.

A place in the tournament still remains in Australia’s hands - a win against Oman is crucial, while top two Saudi Arabia and Japan play each other on Tuesday evening.

“We’ve got a bit of work to do in terms of qualification but we’re on the right track now”, said Rogic.

“I’m just enjoying the moment and looking forward to it.”

Rogic will be looking to extend his run of form on Wednesday morning, with the Socceroos facing Oman at 3:00am AEDT.
