Robertson joins Portsmouth on loan

Subway Socceroos midfielder Alex Robertson has signed with EFL League One club Portsmouth on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

The 20-year-old talented midfielder will join Pompey for the 2023/24 campaign in search of more first-team football.

Robertson pledged his allegiance to Australia back in March and subsequently made his senior debut for the Green and Gold against Ecuador in Sydney.

He also received the second of his two caps in a cameo against Argentina in China in June.

A technically gifted midfielder, the prodigy is hoping to garner more senior experience having been in City's youth set-up for the last six years, outside of a brief loan to Ross County in the Scottish Premiership.

Although he has not a senior appearance for City, Robertson featured in matchday squads towards the end of last campaign after dominating for the U-21s.

Speaking about joining the south coast side, Robertson said, head coach John Mousinho played an importance influence in his decision.

"It feels very good to be at such a big club," he told the Club's official YouTube channel.

"I think it goes without saying how big the club is, it's historic, the ground is unbelievable, the fans are unbelievable.

"But also the gaffer played a big part. He's obviously new and he's young and the way that he presented to me that he wants to play and to the team it really connected with me and I just want to do well."

Robertson outlined his best position and the attributes he will be able to offer fans.

"I can play anywhere in midfield but more so as an attacking midfielder... hopefully try and attack and create and score as many goals as I can."

"I like to do both sides of the game - I love to attack and create and score goals and I also enjoy doing the other side - the defending and getting stuck in.

After spending time training with Manchester City's first team and sharing the pitch with some world-class talent, Robertson revealed he tried to absorb as much knowledge as he could and hopes those experiences can further his development at Fratton Park.

"It's been unbelievable, it's dubbed as the best academy in the world," he admitted.

"To be a part of that and to be able to be coached under some great managers and make friends and teammates has been really good.

"Watching them when I was younger, to then being sat next to some of the best players on the bench and being involved with them in training is unbelievable.

"I tried to soak it all up and try and learn as much as I can off the players and being in front of all the fans and getting to go away to Champions League games - it's priceless experience."

Pompey boss Mousinho added in a statement: “I was lucky enough to watch him play for them on a few occasions last season and he was an integral part of the side.

“He’s won the title there three years in a row and also recently got his first cap for Australia, so we’re really excited that we’ve been able to bring him to the club.

“We wanted that eight/ten who is able to really affect games and it’s another piece of business that I’m incredibly happy with this summer.

“I know that City have high hopes for him and he was involved in Pep’s matchday squads at the end of last season, which is no easy feat.”

Robertson will link up with fellow Aussie and former Adelaide United and Western Sydney Wanderers forward Kusini Yengi.
