Our History vs Uzbekistan

Australia face Uzbekistan at the Al Janoub Stadium in its final Group B game of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™.

It is a venue which has brought huge success for the Aussies, who defeated both Tunisia and Denmark at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.

This meeting against the White Wolves will be the fifth and third at the Asian Cup after knockout stage encounters in 2011 and 2019. Remarkably, Uzbekistan have yet to score a goal against the Aussies in those four matches.

However, they come into Tuesday night's (AEDT) clash in strong form following a 3-0 win over India.

2008 | 1-0 win | FIFA World Cup Qualifier

In front of 34,000 parochial fans in Tashkent, Australia began its fourth round FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010™ Qualifier with solid 1-0 triumph. Scott Chipperfield scored the decisive goal via a header off Luke Wilkshire's inviting cross.

2009 | 2-0 win | FIFA World Cup Qualifier

Australia was a step closer to World Cup qualification in April 2009 when the Aussies defeated the Central Asian side 2-0 at Stadium Australia thanks to an improved second stanza. Mark Bresciano sent in a dangerous delivery which was brilliantly attacked by substitute Josh Kennedy and his header beat Ignatiy Nesterov at his near post. Seven minutes later in the 73rd minute, Richard Garcia won a penalty and Harry Kewell expertly converted to seal an important win.

2011 | 6-0 win | AFC Asian Cup

One of the most comprehensive performances at a major tournament from the Subway Socceroos occurred in the Semi-Final of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011™. Questions about fatigue following an extra-time quarter final win over Iraq were quickly dashed against the impressive Uzbekistan, who had no answers for the Aussies' onslaught as they claimed a 6-0 rout to book a place in the Final. Harry Kewell scored his third goal of the tournament inside five minutes before Sasa Ognenovski made it 2-0 half an hour later. The floodgates opened midway during the second half with David Carney, Brett Emerton, Carl Valeri and Robbie Kruse all getting on the scoresheet to set up a fascinating tie against Japan in the decider.

2019 | 0-0 draw (4-2 win on pens) | AFC Asian Cup

Australia and Uzbekistan met in the Round of 16 in the 2019 iteration of Asia's premier competition. Neither side could break the deadlock after 120 minutes forcing the dreaded penalty shootout. The Aussies would advance in dramatic fashion to the last eight, thanks to a pair of penalty saves from Maty Ryan, who proved the hero on the night. Mark Milligan, Robbie Kruse, Apostolos Giannou, and Mathew Leckie all converted their spot kicks.
