The numbers don't lie: Aaron Mooy’s stellar season with Celtic

It is fair to say Aaron Mooy is experiencing a sensational season in the Scottish Premiership with giants Celtic FC.

The metronome in midfield, Mooy is a brilliant orchestrator from the centre of the pitch, pulling the strings and creating numerous opportunities for his fellow teammates, while adding goals to his game.

Mooy also impressed at the FIFA World Cup, playing every minute of all four of Australia's games at the tournament, and has since continued that rich vein of form with his club side.

In 23 league appearances this campaign, Mooy has four goals and six assists.

Our friends at Opta have crunched the numbers as we analyse the impact the 32-year-old midfielder is having on the Hoops following his arrival in the summer from Shanghai Port.

Mooy is arguably in career best form with his level of consistency putting the competition on notice since working his way to full fitness.

And that is saying something after he enjoyed a couple of strong seasons in the Championship and Premier League with Huddersfield Town and even Brighton & Hove Albion.

Mooy’s current purple patch has seen him score four goals in as many matches across all competitions or six in his previous eight (including his brace in the Scottish Cup).

Whichever way you slice it, Mooy’s recent displays have been nothing short of quality and he is quickly endearing himself to the Celtic faithful.

As mentioned, Mooy has also laid on a further six assists in the Scottish top-flight which is 3.5 more than his expected assists (2.5), with no player in the competition outperforming their expected assists by more in the 2022/23 season.

Those six assists have derived from 26 chances created.

The Subway Socceroo, who has 57 caps and seven goals, is not just a creative force though and has contributed on the defensive end too.

He has won possession back 80 times, made 20 tackles, and produced eight interceptions due to his expert positioning and anticipation.

Maintaining this level of productivity will indeed be a tough ask, but however the remainder of the season plays out, Mooy has been a joy watch as the Bhoys currently hold a nine-point lead over rivals Rangers at the top of the table.

Celtic and Aaron Mooy return to action on Sunday morning (5am AEDT) for a Scottish Cup 5th Round tie with St Mirren.
