Nerves of steel: Mabil keeps his composure to score two late penalties in Sparta win

Awer Mabil inspired Sparta Prague to a dramatic 3-1 win over FC Slovan Liberec after scoring a pair of penalties in stoppage time.

With his side trailing 1-0 at the break, Mabil was introduced at half-time and proceeded to score his first goals for the club and fire Sparta two points clear at the summit of the Czech First League after rivals Slavia Praha were held by Hradec Kralove.

He scored the equaliser in the 90th minute, confidently dispatching his first spot-kick before the visitors were awarded a second 10 minutes later following intervention from the VAR.

The 27-year-old took the responsibility again, placing his attempt in the identical spot and this time also sending the goalkeeper the wrong way, before Jan Kuchta made it 3-1.

"No, no, we've been working so hard that when these moments come, I just know where to put it," Mabil told AC Sparta Prague after the match when asked if he had any nerves.

"And they went in today and the most important is the three points.

"We're just fighting for that championship."

The capital-based side, who is the most successful team in Czechia and are chasing their first league title since the 2013/14 season, take on Slavia Praha in the Cup Final on Thursday morning (AEST) before playing five championship round matches.

Mabil joined the Czechia outfit in January on loan from LaLiga side Cadiz, reuniting with former FC Midtjylland manager Brian Priske.
