Miller buoyant after first full match for Socceroos

Lewis Miller was ecstatic after completing his first full match for the Subway Socceroos on Thursday night against Bangladesh.

Miller played his first game for the Socceroos on home soil as Australia defeated Bangladesh 7-0 at AAMI Park.

He said there was nowhere better to get through his first full game for his country.

The fullback did not stop running up and down the right flank, picking up an assist for Jamie Maclaren’s hat-trick goal.

“It was good; good to be back home. I couldn’t think of any other place to do it [play 90 minutes for the first time] than Australia,” Miller said.

“I’m just glad to be amongst this wonderful group, some high-quality players. Hopefully, we can continue to perform and get a few wins.

“I like to get involved no matter what the scenario is. You’ve got to give 120% representing not only yourself but your country - it’s a great honour to put on the badge.”

Miller formed a partnership with Connor Metcalfe on the right against Bangladesh, which he said was a first-time thing.

Miller found Metcalfe to start the move for Australia’s second, with the Germany-based midfielder sliding across for Brandon Borrello for a tap-in.

“I love the way he [Metcalfe] plays. He just drifts into the space, and then all I have to do is give him an option, whether that’s out wide or inside,” he said.

“I know that with his qualities, he’s going to find me.”

Miller credited the individual performances of his teammates, explaining that everyone stuck to the game plan.

“We’re just very happy with the win,” he said.

“Individually, everyone did their job and they knew what they had to do. It was very clear when we got out and stepped on the field.

“You saw on the pitch today that we’re clinical upfront and in that transition to defence, we’re switched on as well.”
