Match Preview: New Zealand vs Subway Socceroos

Australia and New Zealand meet again on Sunday at 1pm (AEST) only this time across the Tasman at Eden Park in Auckland.

The match will shape up as the Subway Socceroos’ final clash before the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ begins in November.

The Aussies prevailed 1-0 in Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night, thanks to Awer Mabil’s brilliant strike.

Graham Arnold confirmed following the contest he will be experimenting with a largely new side. Up to seven players could be in line to receive their maiden caps for their country.

Jason Cummings, Garang Kuol, Tyrese Francois, Ryan Strain Keanu Baccus, Cameron Devlin and Harrison Delbridge did not feature on Thursday evening and could all play a role on Sunday.

Head-to-head, the two teams have now met 64 times in men’s football, with the Subway Socceroos winning 40 to New Zealand’s 13. Eleven games have finished in draws – with only two of them goalless.

Team news

Graham Arnold confirmed he will ring the changes in the post-match press conference after the Subway Socceroos’ win over the Kiwis on Thursday night. The starting XI of the 31-player squad will not make the journey across the Tasman. With that the case, as mentioned, a catalogue of players could make their senior international debuts.

Arnie on giving the youngsters an opportunity…

“The young boys you can see there’s a lot of energy and they’re desperate to get on that pitch and I’m looking forward to see how they go.

“A lot of them I had with the Olyroos and I know them obviously well and a lot of them are playing a lot of football overseas.

“They arrived late a good number of them, the ones that weren’t on the list and they’ll recover over the next day or so and we’ll train them hard Friday and then we fly out Saturday to play Sunday.”

Arnie on the performance against New Zealand…

“I think if there’s one thing a little disappointing was that I thought we lost the physical battle.

“The New Zealanders were quite physical… Overall I think we should’ve scored a couple more goals.”

Opta Insights: New Zealand vs Australia, September 25

  • New Zealand will host Australia in a men’s international for the first time since July 2002 when they logged a 1-0 win over the Subway Socceroos; they will be looking to win back-to-back home games against Australia for the first time ever
  • Australia have won their last four straight men’s internationals after winning only one of their seven games prior (D3 L3); in fact, the Subway Socceroos have lost only one of their last 10 international friendlies (W7 D2).
  • New Zealand are winless in their last four men’s internationals (D1 L3); the last time they went longer without a win was a six-game stretch from September 2017 to June 2018 (D2 L4).
  • Martin Boyle has made 28 take-ons for Australia in men’s internationals in 2022, twice as many as any other Socceroos player in that time; however, Mat Leckie (5) has made more take-ons in the opposition box than any other player for Australia in that period.
