Ryan: 'We will keep giving everything we've got’

Socceroos captain Maty Ryan knows his side must learn from Wednesday morning’s draw against Oman and give everything they have got to qualify directly for a fifth consecutive World Cup.

Australia’s hopes of automatic qualification for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 ™ were dealt a blow after being held to a 2-2 draw Oman in Muscat on Wednesday morning (AEDT).

The Socceroos twice led through Jamie Maclaren and Aaron Mooy in Muscat but were pegged back to share the points.

Ryan could not hide his disappointment after the match but insisted that his squad must band together to overcome the forthcoming hurdles.

“Very disappointing. We came here, we prepared well, and at the end of the day it’s not good enough to take something away from the game,” Ryan said post-game.

“It’s not the first time it’s happened this campaign so it’s very disappointing on that aspect.

We've got to learn from it. There are still possibilities and we'll keep giving everything we’ve got.

“When you face a bit of hardship, it's all about how you respond and that's got to be the focus now.

“We’ve got to learn from what we did tonight, what we did poorly and what we need to improve on to make us better moving forward.”

Maty Ryan — Australia’s remaining two Group B matches are against Japan and leaders Saudi Arabia, who despite being beaten 2-0 by Japan on Tuesday night, are four points ahead of the Socceroos.

The result leaves Australia three points adrift of the group’s automatic qualification positions with just two games left to play in Round 3 of AFC FIFA World Cup qualifying.

Australia’s two remaining fixtures are against the two sides who sit above them in the group - Graham Arnold’s men host Japan in Sydney on March 24 before heading to group leaders Saudi Arabia for their final qualifier.

As qualification reaches a crescendo, Ryan emplored Aussie football fans to get behind the Socceroos when they host Japan in their last home match.

“The fans are always an extra bit of personnel when we play and it's going to be no different when we go back home in March to play against Japan,” he said.

We need wins now so we prepare every game to win.

“Unfortunately, we haven't done that often enough, hence we're in the position that we are but we’ve got to win games in order to qualify and let's hope it goes our way in the other fixtures also.”
