Former Socceroo Archie Thompson hangs up the boots

Former Socceroo Archie Thompson has officially hung up the boots, announcing the end of his playing career last week.

He announced his retirement via an Instagram post, featuring a picture of him playing for Gippsland Falcons, his first professional club.

Thompson, 42, played over 50 times for the Socceroos after making his debut in 2001, a game in which he scored in.

The striker scored 28 times in total across his 12-year career, including the international record of 13 goals in one match against American Samoa back in 2001.

He remains the third-highest goalscorer in Socceroos history, behind Tim Cahill (50 goals) and Damian Mori (29).

Thompson was part of the Socceroos' FIFA World Cup 2006 squad, having played the first leg of the play-off with Uruguay, but did not feature in the tournament.

The New Zealand-born forward remains as one of the best goalscorers in A-League history, scoring 90 goals for Melbourne Victory.

He is also third on the all-time goalscoring list, despite playing his last game for the Victory - a club where he won three A-League Premierships and Championships - in 2016.

Archie celebrates five goals

Thompson also holds the record for most goals in a single A-League match, when he scored five in the 2007 Grand Final against Adelaide United.

Since leaving the A-League, Thompson spent some time in the NPL Victoria, representing Heidelberg United and Murray United.

He even had a short stint overseas, playing for Racing Murcia in Spain, where the video of his debut went viral, getting almost half-a-million views.
