Football Australia and Mark Bosnich visit second-oldest Socceroo Alan Garside

Alongside former Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Bosnich, Football Australia paid a special visit to former Socceroo Alan Garside to present him with a personalised jersey.

Alan is understood to be the second-oldest living Socceroo at 94 years of age.

He is Socceroos cap 148, having played one ‘A’ international within a total of five internationals where he scored three goals between 1953 and 1957.

His ‘A’ international match was played on Saturday, 1 October 1955, with South Africa defeating Australia 4-1 at the Newcastle Sports Ground in front of just under 3,000 people.

Following the game Alan swapped his jersey for a ‘Springboks’ jersey, leaving him without physical memorabilia of the special occasion.

In recognition of his story, this week at Garside's residence in Ferndale Gardens, Mortdale, the former Socceroo was presented with a personal version of the Australia's newest jersey in front of over 30 members of his family and the local football community.

Keep an eye on Football Australia's channels in the coming weeks for a special extended feature showcasing the day and Garside’s contribution to football in NSW and Australia.
