'I let him off a bit lightly!': The hilarious origin of Boyle & Behich's friendship

Over the last few years, Aziz Behich and Martin Boyle have formed a strong friendship while on national team duty.

Speaking on the Countdown to Qatar Podcast, Behich shared how a stitch-up engineered by former Australia captain Mark Milligan started it off on a hilarious note.

It all began when the Scottish-born Boyle was called up into an Australia camp for the first time in 2018 and was allocated as a roommate of Behich, based on nothing more than alphabetical order.

It allowed Milligan, a teammate of the winger at Hibernian at the time, to set him up in classic Aussie fashion.

"Millsy stitched him up and told him, "He's like your Scottish background but Turkish background, he doesn't speak any English," Behich recalled on the Countdown to Qatar Podcast.

"So he's woken me up late at night, I don't know what time he's got in, and didn't even have a key so that's already a bad start.

"I've opened the door. And he's just said, 'Hi, I'm Martin Boyle' like I don't understand what he's saying.

"I just said, mate - you want to come in? And he just looked at me!"

I said to Millsy, 'you should have told me earlier, I would have played along with it for a little bit!'"

"That was our first interaction we had and from then, we've been roommates for a bit, just kept good contact, and gotten closer. Even when I was in Turkey, when he moved to Saudi and now we're both over here (Scotland)."

Socceroos home jersey 2022 - Our Story Is Never Done

The two now live nearby in Edinburgh, after Behich made the move to Dundee United in Scotland a few months ago.

It was a move that his good friend Boyle played a part in making happen - with manager Jack Ross having previously coached the Subway Socceroos winger at Hibs.

"I got a lot of information from him (Boyle) before I came over, of course," Behich shared.

"I'm pretty sure he (Jack Ross) contacted Boyley as well, just to get any insight of myself and, Boyley did what he did. Not sure what happened in those phone calls!"

Two weeks ago, the pair's paths crossed in Scotland for the first time.

And, it was Behich who came away with the bragging rights, popping up with a rare goal off the back of a superb solo run.

The Australian fullback's strike was the only of the game, as Dundee United came away with a 1-0 win.

"Playing against Boyley, I knew was going to be a tough one for me," Behich said.

"We spoke in the lead-up to, gave each other a bit of stick, but I think I got on top in that game.

"But we'll see each other a few more times this season so I think I let him off a bit lightly on that one!

"I'm really good friends with Boyley but when the game is on, you kind of forget that.

"We're both out there to do a job at the end of the day, afterwards we'll have a laugh about it."
