Australia U-23 bound for Cambodia on road to Tokyo

The Australian U-23 Men’s National Team’s road to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo will begin in Cambodia next March when the qualifying phase for the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship is held.

On Wednesday at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Australia were drawn in Group H of qualifying for the tournament alongside hosts Cambodia, Korea Republic, and Chinese Taipei.

Australia will play Cambodia in game one on March 22, before backing up against Chinese Taipei two days later. On March 26, Australia will meet Korea Republic in the team’s third and final qualification fixture.

Australia will qualify for the 2020 AFC U23 Championship, to be held in Thailand in January 2020, should the team either win Group H, or finish as one of the four best second-placed teams in qualifying.

The fifth-best second-placed team from the 11 groups will also qualify should Thailand – who have qualified automatically for the tournament as hosts – finish as either Group K winners or runners-up.
