Aussies Abroad: Wright on the way to Wembley with Sunderland

Socceroos defender Bailey Wright is on the way to Wembley for the League One Playoff Final, after overcoming a fellow Aussie in this morning's semi-final!

A 2-1 aggregate victory over Massimo Luongo's Sheffield Wednesday was sealed in dramatic fashion, as Patrick Roberts struck late in stoppage time for the Black Cats.

The result leaves Wright 90 minutes away from Championship football, booking a date with Wycombe Wanderers in the League One Playoff Final.

It marks the second consecutive year a Socceroo has played in the shootout for a second-tier berth, after Kenny Dougall stole the show with a brace for Blackpool in last year's edition.

Wright will be hoping for a similarly strong showing, to help the North East club take a step back towards the pinnacle of English football.

"First and foremost, Sheffield Wednesday gave us a good game over two legs, unfortunately there's always a loser," Wright said following Sunderland's semi-final triumph.

"But for us, we've got ourselves in the final, we put our bodies on the line and we have big-game players who can show their quality and punish teams.

"It's a joy for us, we gave our boys the platform to go on and win the game and the support from the fans was unreal, it just goes to show the size of the club.

"But the job isn't done, there's a long way to go yet."

Sunderland take on Wycombe at Wembley on Sunday, May 22 (12am AEST).
