Aussies Abroad Wrap: Mooy & Metcalfe score, McGree assists & Souttar makes Premier League debut

In this week's Aussies Abroad action, Aaron Mooy put in another standout display in the Scottish Premiership while Harry Souttar made his Premier League debut.

Starting in England, where Harry Souttar made his Premier League debut with 90 minutes for Leicester City in a 4-2 win against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Souttar had an eventful match as he overcame the nightmare of scoring an own goal on his debut to then go on and make an assured start as the Foxes came from behind twice to win. 

It was a cruel start to life in the top flight but Souttar bounced back to have a solid game as Leicester moved up 13th with three key points in their relegation battle.

Opta Insight: Harry Souttar (Leicester City) made seven clearances on his English Premier League debut; only two players made more across the matchday for any team (Wily Boly, Mohammed Salisu - 9).

Elsewhere in England, Riley McGree starred once again for Middlesbrough with another 90 minutes and an assist for the second goal in a 3-0 win over Blackpool in the Championship on Sunday. 

McGree contributed to a fantastic team goal with clever nutmeg to allow Chuba Akpom to run through and finish from close range.

Michael Carrick's side stay third in the Championship table with what was a fifth successive league win at the Riverside.

Opta Insight: No player created more scoring chances in Matchday 30 of the EFL Championship than Middlesbrough's Riley McGree (3), with one of those three resulting in an assist.

Kenny Dougall also came off the bench in the 60th minute for Blackpool.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Bailey Wright made his first appearance for Rotherham United as they drew 0-0 with Sheffield United on Saturday.

Wright came off the bench in the 69th minute but did not touch the ball before going off with a suspected concussion four minutes later. 

Callum Elder also played 90 minutes in the Championship as Hull City beat Cardiff City 1-0 on Sunday.

In Scotland, Aaron Mooy put in another impressive display with Celtic as he scored his fourth goal in as many matches to help 
the Hoops cruise past St. Johnstone 4-1 on Sunday.

Mooy started again and played 79 minutes in another standout display to extend Celtic's lead to nine points atop of the Scottish Premiership.

Kye Rowles started and played 69t minutes while Garang Kuol came on in the 69th minute as Heart of Midlothian beat Dundee United 3-1 on Sunday. 

Opta Insight: Kye Rowles (Heart of Midlothian) had a passing accuracy of 91% in Matchday 25 of the Scottish Premier League, the highest of any player from outside the United Kingdom to make at least 50 passes.

Nathaniel Atkinson was an unused substitute. 

Keanu Baccus and Ryan Strain also started and played another 90 minutes as St Mirren lost 1-0 to James Jeggo's Hibernian on Sunday.

Jeggo also started and played 90 minutes as Hibernian moved above St Mirren into fifth with a big three points. 

Elsewhere in Scotland, Dylan McGowan played another 90 minutes in the Championship for Hamilton Academical as they drew 1-1 with Dundee on Sunday.

Europe

In Germany, Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe both started and played 90 minutes for St Pauli in the 2. Bundesliga with a 2-0 win against Hannover 96 on Sunday. 

Metcalfe also found himself on the scoresheet with an impressive left footed curling effort from the corner of the penalty area in the 27th minute.

Awer Mabil came off the bench in the 65th minute as AC Sparta Prague beat FK Mladá Boleslav 4-1 on Monday in the Czech First League.

In the Netherlands, Maty Ryan started again for AZ Alkmaar as they drew 1-1 with FC Volendam on Sunday.

 AZ currently sit second on the Eredivisie ladder, two points behind Feyenoord. 

In Serie B, Fran Karacic started but was sent off in the 16th minute as Brescia Calcio lost 4-0 to Perugia on Sunday. 

Karacic picked up a yellow card within the opening five minutes of the match before receiving a second for a high challenge ten minutes later. 

Jason Davidson started and played another 90 minutes as KAS Eupen drew 1-1 with Westerlo in the Belgian Pro League on Saturday. 

Eupen are two points above the relegation zone in 14th in the Belgian First League. 

James Holland started but had to leave the pitch due to injury after 16 minutes in FK Austria Wien's 1-1 friendly draw with FAC Team für Wien on Saturday. Tthe Austrian Bundesliga resumes on February 13.

In Norway, Nick D'Agostino came off the bench to feature for Viking FK as they beat Halmstad 2-0 in the Atlantic Cup in Portugal on Saturday. 

Staying in the Nordic nation, Australia U23's midfielder Patrick Yazbek will be joining D'Agostino at Viking after the club announced his signing from Sydney FC. The midfielder will remain with the Sky Blues for the next three A-League Men's matches before moving abroad.

United Kingdom

In the English Championship, goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic was on the bench as Huddersfield drew 1-1 with Queens Park Rangers on Sunday.

In League two, Lachlan Brook came on in the 60th minute as Crewe Alexandra lost 3-0 to Grimsby Town on Sunday. 

In Scotland, Lewis Miller was an unused substitute as Hibernian beat St Mirren 1-0 on Sunday.

Europe

In the Netherlands, Josh Rawlins was an unused subisute as Jong FC Utrecht lost 6-1 to Heracles on Saturday in the Eerste Divisie.

  • In Italy's Serie A, Cristian Volpato was an unused substitute as AS Roma beat Empoli 2-0 on Sunday.
  • In Serie B, Alessandro Circati was an unused substitute as Parma beat Genoa 2-0 on Monday.
  • In Greece, Apostolos Stamatelopoulos came off the bench in the 85th minute as PAS Giannina drew 0-0 with OFI Crete on Sunday in the Super League. 
  • In France's National 2, Mohamed Toure started and played 66 minutes while Yaya Dukuly came off the bench in the 87th minute as Stade Reims II beat Boulogne 2-1 on Saturday.

  • In Malaysia, Giancarlo Gallifuoco won the Piala Menteri WP 2023 pre season cup with 90 minutes and a goal in Kuala Lumpur City's 3-0 win over Perak FC on Sunday. The Malaysia Super League starts on February 25.
