Aussies Abroad Wrap: Metcalfe scores first St. Pauli goal, Mooy's Celtic thump Rangers

It was another big weekend of Aussies Abroad action as Connor Metcalfe bagged his first St. Pauli goal to rescue a point while Aaron Mooy’s Celtic thumped Rangers in the Old Firm derby.

Europe

Starting in Germany, where Connor Metcalfe came off the bench in the 79th minute to score his first St. Pauli goal and rescue a point against SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Saturday. 

Metcalfe received the ball on the edge of the area after winning possession in the midfield and slammed the ball past Andreas Linde to secure a 2-2 draw at the Stadion am Laubenweg. 

Jackson Irvine also started the match, played 90 minutes and scored an unfortunate own goal as he captained the side to a second consecutive 2-2 draw. 

In Denmark, Mat Ryan kept another clean sheet as FC Copenhagen won 1-0 against Silkeborg on Saturday. The win leaves Copenhagen in fifth, four points off the top of the Danish Superliga. 

 

In Italy, Ajdin Hrustic was an unused substitute for Serie A side Hellas Verona as beat Sampdoria 2-1 on Monday.  Hrustic signed for the club on Thursday after a successful two-year stint with Eintracht Frankfurt.

In France, Denis Genreau was also an unused substitute as Toulouse FC lost 2-1 against Clermont Foot on Sunday.

In Belgium, Jason Davidson and James Jeggo both started and played 88 minutes in K.A.S. Eupen's 1-0 loss against Kortrijk on Sunday. 

In Olyroos abroad news, Alou Kuol started and played 90 minutes as VfB Stuttgart II drew with TuS RW Koblenz on Saturday while Josh Rawlins also started and played 90 minutes in Jong FC Utrecht's 2-1 loss to VVV-Venlo. 

In Croatia, Tyrese Francois made his HNK Gorica debut after coming on in the 58th minute as Gorica lost 2-1 against NK Varaždin on Sunday.

United Kingdom

Starting in Scotland, where Aaron Mooy and Celtic continued their unbeaten start to the season by thumping Rangers FC 4-0 on Saturday in the Old Firm derby. 

Mooy came off the bench in the 73rd minute to see out the victory and ensure Celtic extended their lead over their rivals to five points.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Martin Boyle started and played 90 minutes as Hibernian beat Kilmarnock 1-0 on Sunday while  Olyroo Lewis Miller was an unused substitute.

Aziz Behich also started and played 90 minutes as Dundee United drew 0-0 with Motherwell on Sunday. 

In England, Kenny Dougall started and played 90 minutes as Blackpool beat Huddersfield 1-0 on Monday.

In Olyroos Abroad news, goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic also featured on the bench as Dougall's Blackpool beat Huddersfield on Monday.

Asia

In Japan, Adam Taggart started and played 58 minutes as Cerezo Osaka lost 2-1 against Consadole Sapporo on Friday.

Elsewhere in Japan, Mitch Duke registered an assist as Fagiano Okayama beat 2-0 Machida Zelvia on Sunday at 8pm (AEST). Duke received the ball on the edge of the area and laid the ball off to Kodai Sano, who thumped the ball into the net to cap off a memorable win. The victory solidifies Fagiano's place in third position on the J2 League ladder. 

The United States

In Major League Soccer, Socceroos defender Miloš Degenek started and played another 90 minutes as Columbus Crew drew 0-0 with Chicago on Sunday.  The point lifts Columbus into sixth on the MLS Eastern Conference as they look to wrap up a final series play-off position.

  • In France's Ligue 2, Alex Gersbach started and played 90 minutes at left wing back as Grenoble Foot 38 lost 1-0 to Amiens SC.
  • In France's Championnat National 2, Mohamed Touré won and converted a penalty as Stade de Reims II won 1-0 against US Boulogne CO.
  • In the Croatian Football League, Deni Juric scored and was sent off as HNK Gorica lost 2-1 to NK Slaven Belupo.
  • In Greece, Apostolos Stamatelopoulos came on in the 77th minute as PAS Giannina lost 2-0 against AEK Athens FC.

United Kingdom

  • In the Scottish Premiership, Ryan McGowan started and played 90 minutes as St. Johnston beat St. Mirren 3-0. Keanu Baccus and Ryan Strain also started for St. Mirren. 
  • Elsewhere in Scotland, Cameron Devlin started and played 56 minutes as Hearts lost to Livingston 1-0. 
  • In the English Championship, Callum Elder played 69 minutes as Hull City lost 2-0 to Sheffield United.
  • In League One, Caleb Watts started and played 82 minutes as Morecambe drew 2-2 with Bristol Rovers.
  • Elsewhere in League One, Jack Iredale started and played 90 minutes as Bolton won 3-1 against Charlton.

  • In the Israeli Premier League, Nikita Rukavytsya came on in the 84th minute as Maccabi Haifa won 2- against Hapoel Be'er Sheva FC.
  • In the J2 League, Thomas Deng started and played 90 minutes as Albirex Niigata lost 1-0 to Oita Trinita.
